Juventus Coach Didier Deschamps believes that March and April will be critical in the side’s bid for promotion.

The Bianconeri lead the table with 49 points, seven ahead of third-placed Genoa, and will play five crucial matches in the next 15 days.

“We took advantage of the fact that not everyone behind us managed to win and we were able to increase the lead over third place,” said Deschamps.

“The win against Piacenza especially helped, apart from allowing us to regain the top spot. It was an important step forward, but there are still many more ahead of us.

“The three points for a win allows you to easily increase the lead. Except for Napoli and us, all the others clubs had more problems over the weekend,” explained the Frenchman.

“March and April are decisive months, at the end of which the standings will be clearer. An important period starts now, there won’t be time to work between one match and the other, and everyone’s help will be fundamental.”

Meanwhile, FIAT President Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo has confirmed that the Italian car manufacturer could become the Old Lady’s new sponsor.

FIAT have always been very close to the Turin outfit and both nephews of ‘Avocato’ Gianni Agnelli – Lapo and John Elkann – are both candidates to become the next President of the club.

“It is probable that talks will be re-opened, there is the intention of sponsoring Juventus,” confirmed Di Montezemolo.

Juventus lost out on a massive £160m after Tamoil rescinded their shirt sponsorship contract with the club in December.

The Bianconeri had a deal in place with the company until 2010, but the oil giants decided to end their relationship with after the club’s demotion to Serie B.

Buffon: Juve needed me Wednesday 7 March, 2007

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has confirmed staying in Serie B was a spontaneous decision. “I knew they needed me here.”

The Bianconero was one of the few players who committed to the club despite the demotion and has reiterated that he had no regrets.


“Remaining here was a spontaneous decision, no one asked me to stay but I did so. I understood that the club needed me in such a difficult moment,” said Buffon on Wednesday speaking to a group of students at the Turin University.


“I lent a helping hand to people who always loved me, although it is logical that my ambition was not to play in Serie B.”


The former Parma man has been linked with a summer move to Milan or Inter, but insists that nothing has been decided yet.


“I don’t know what will happen, but I would like to stay here. I have an excellent relationship with the club and we are currently discussing what the future options are.”


The world champion then commented on Juve’s performances in the championship, stating that he hopes there will not be any drops in the team’s concentration.


“This is certainly a positive moment for us, we hope we can continue like this and win the Serie B title. We have a fairly good lead over the third-placed club, but we mustn’t rest on our laurels.


“I am sure we can do even better in the next matches, taking advantage of the fixture list.”


Buffon was also questioned about the recent violence problems, which he believes are not only related to sport.


“This issue doesn’t only affect the world of football, but it depends on the way society is educated nowadays.


“In any case, I don’t think it’s fair to talk about violence inside stadiums because of 50 hotheads who represent only a very small part of the Italian supporters,” concluded Buffon.
