Perrotta's blast from the past Tuesday 3 April, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simone Perrotta was born near Manchester, but a tactical reshuffle could mean facing his past in more ways than one.
“It is a particularly special sensation for me compared to my teammates to play this tie,” said the Roma star who lived in Ashton until the age of three.
“That is both for the importance of the club we are facing and so that my parents can return to visit a place where they lived for many years.”
Perrotta is revisiting his past in more ways than one, as due to David Pizarro’s suspension he could be fielded in a holding midfield position.
“It won’t be a problem for me, as it is my natural role. I played there for Chievo and would like to have this opportunity to prove myself with Roma in this task. It is not true that I have always played as a Trequartista under Luciano Spalletti, as I have varied my position around the midfield.”
However, there are rumours in the Italian Press that Spalletti will pull a different tactical experiment on Manchester United.
Cristian Chivu could fill in for Pizarro alongside Daniele De Rossi in a midfield position he has already held in his career with Holland and Ajax.
This would bring Matteo Ferrari into central defence, where he has worked well with Philippe Mexes in Chivu’s absence due to a fractured nose.
Christian Panucci moves to left-back where he will be given the responsibility of closing down Cristiano Ronaldo, as Max Tonetto is out for a fortnight injured.
“This Roma side is very similar to the Nazionale that won the World Cup,” added Perrotta. “We are a compact unit with a real team mentality and hope to obtain the same results.
“We are approaching this tie like any other – aware it is an important match, but preparing the same way as usual, whether it is Ascoli or Manchester United on the fixture list.”
The Giallorossi relished their underdog status against Lyon and hope to repeat the shock tactic on Sir Alex Ferguson.
“There is pressure, just as there was against Lyon, but we are stronger now. We know we can do well in Europe and that qualification gave us more confidence in our potential.”
Roma squad: Curci, Doni, Julio Sergio, Cassetti, Chivu, Defendi, Ferrari, Freddi, Mexes, Panucci, De Rossi, Faty, Mancini, Perrotta, Rosi, Taddei, Virga, Wilhelmsson, Okaka, Totti, Vucinic
Spalletti reveals United significance Tuesday 3 April, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roma boss Luciano Spalletti believes that the Champions League tie with Manchester United is one of the most important of his career.
The two teams face each other at the Olimpico on Wednesday night and the tactician is hoping that he will find the serenity needed to enjoy such a special occasion.
“This is certainly one of the most important matches I have ever faced, along with the play-off between Empoli and Modena for Serie B,” said a smiling Spalletti during his Press conference.
“It will be tough for me to stay calm though as it is a unique experience when you enter a crowded Olimpico.
“I will just try to stay as serene as possible so that I can take pleasure in the evening,” added the former Udinese tactician.
Manchester United will be favourites to qualify for the semi-finals, but Roma weren’t fancied against Lyon either.
“It will not be easy for us, but I am sure that we can create some difficulties for them,” continued the 4-2-3-1 disciple.
“English clubs are not as alert in defence as we are here in this country so I think we can do well.
“They are missing some important players, but this will not change our strategy. We must try to win without conceding any opportunities as away goals can be decisive.”
Cristiano Ronaldo and Francesco Totti are expected to be the protagonists in Wednesday’s clash, but Spalletti has no doubts regarding which player he would rather have at his disposal.
“I would never swap Francesco with Ronaldo, I know Francesco and he has many qualities and few defects,” he added.
“Alex Ferguson has asked the referee to protect Ronaldo? Players’ legs are all the same – I don’t see why he should be any different.
“In any case, we will win if we play well, not thanks to fouls.”
Spalletti was also annoyed with reports that United fans might encounter danger within certain areas of Rome.
“We were annoyed by this campaign as it suggested that our fans are violent,” he noted.
“We already responded to Lyon’s accusations by proving they were wrong, now I hope we will do the same with Manchester.”
Mexes rejected United offer Tuesday 3 April, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roma defender Philippe Mexes has admitted that he turned down two offers from Manchester United in the past.
The Giallorossi host the Old Trafford outfit at the Olimpico in the Champions League on Wednesday night, a game which has special significance for the Frenchman.
“I was 16 or 17 the first time they asked me to join Manchester United,” said Mexes to the French website Sport24.
“I was then contacted again when I left Auxerre, although it was mainly Coach Guy Roux who thought that I should move to England,” added the Giallorosso.
“However, I decided to sign for Roma as I felt they wanted me more.
“Furthermore, I didn’t feel that I could face such a big change. At the time Roma were an important club, but not as strong as today.”
Mexes, who joined the capital city boys in 2004 from Ligue 1 in a controversial switch which also saw him banned for a short time, added that he has no regrets about his peninsula switch.
“I visited Manchester and I met Alex Ferguson. I was young and it felt like a dream, but I wouldn’t change a single thing,” he added.
“I have improved a lot in the Italian championship and I don’t know if this would have happened in England.
“Moving to Roma definitely wasn’t a waste of time,” concluded the promising French international.
Roma threat worries Giggs Tuesday 3 April, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has admitted that he fears Champions League rivals Roma. “It won’t be an easy tie,” he warned.
The Red Devils travel to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday for the first leg of their last eight tie and the veteran is aware of the Giallorossi’s strength.
“They are a team that we have never played in the Champions League, so it’s new territory for us,” said Giggs to Manchester United Radio.
“Obviously they are a good side. Anybody that beats Lyon 2-0 away from home are a force to be reckoned with. We will need to play well and we know that,” continued the player.
“These are the quarter-finals of the Champions League, they are all good teams and it’s going to be difficult.
“However, if we keep playing like we know we can and everyone plays well individually and as a team we will have a great chance.”
Louis Saha and Darren Fletcher were both included in the 19-man party chosen by Sir Alex Ferguson for the visit to Rome. South Korea midfielder Park Ji-Sung was the only unexpected absentee.
