Munich- Germany and Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian
Schweinsteiger could be out for the season as he fears suffering from
a tick bite, German news reports said on Friday.
Munich doctors are yet to confirm the nature of the illness which
has sidelined the popular player since last week, but Schweinsteiger
was quoted as saying in Munich's Abendblatt daily that he does not
rule out a tick bite.
"I had a tick bite in September 2003, my left knee and my right
ankle were heavily swollen. The problem then went away. Maybe it is
the same problem now. But this time only the left knee is swollen,"
he said.
Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was quoted as saying in the Bild daily: "All
possibilities are being checked. A tick bite can not be ruled out."
Schweinsteiger said the knee started to hurt shortly after he
scored Munich's 2-1 league winner last week Saturday in Hanover.
Doctors tried in vain to get him fit for Wednesday's Champions
League match with AC Milan which the German champions lost 2-0 and
Bild said that that he may not return to action this season.
Tick bites can lead to lyme desease or borreliosis, a chronic
viral infection which can last for years. Patients can suffer from
fever and fatigue, or even meningitis.
Two former Bundesliga players, Zoltan Sebescen of Bayer Leverkusen
and Thomas Schneider of VfB Stuttgart, had to end their careers over
tick bites.ტეხავს
