Fabio Quagliarella marked his first Azzurri start with a sensational brace as Italy dominated a 2-0 victory in Lithuania for their fifth straight win.
Roberto Donadoni made five changes to the side that beat the Faroe Islands 2-1 on Saturday, as Gianluca Zambrotta, Daniele De Rossi, Fabio Quagliarella, Simone Perrotta and Antonio Di Natale came in for Max Tonetto, Gennaro Gattuso, Tommaso Rocchi, Alessandro Del Piero and Aimo Diana.
Lithuania had held the Azzurri to a 1-1 draw in Naples in their opening Group B game and had familiar faces such as Bologna's Tomas Danilevicius and Marius Stankevicius of Brescia.
Pippo Inzaghi failed to get on the end of Andrea Pirlo's pass across the face of goal by a matter of inches, hoping to add to the brace he got against the Faroe Islands. A Perrotta diving header was smothered and the Romanista drilled well over from distance.
The best chance of the game so far fell to Di Natale on 22 minutes. He was sent clear on goal from Pirlo's assist, but after a strong run completely scuffed the finish almost off his ankle and sent the tame shot wide of the near post.
Moments later a similar move saw Azzurri swarm around the penalty area with Quagliarella aiming something between a shot and an assist for Inzaghi into the centre, where it was intercepted by some desperate defending. Perrotta's header looped over, infuriating Inzaghi in a better position behind him.
Zambrotta was brought down on the edge of the area, but against the run of play Gigi Buffon fingertipped a Savenas snapshot from 25 metres just wide of the upright.
Moments later Fabio Quagliarella opened the scoring for Italy. Celebrating his first start in the Azzurri jersey, he found space on the edge of the area by dribbling clear of Morinas and unleashed a fierce left-foot drive that swerved past Grybauskas at the near post. Adding to his 13 Serie A goals for Sampdoria this term, Quagliarella is set to be hot property on the transfer market this summer.
An inspired Di Natale slide-rule pass found Inzaghi clear on goal, but he took one too many touches and allowed the defender to muscle him off the ball.
A Daniele De Rossi error let Lithuania push forward and Buffon held the deflected Kalonas strike.
Pirlo was booked for a clumsy foul on Danilevicius as he burst into the area, as the foul began outside the box. From that free kick Stankevicius' rocket swung inches over the bar.
Lithuanian goalkeeper Grybauskas came flying out for an acrobatic tip, flapping a long cross off Inzaghi's head. Hearts man Mikoliunas was introduced before half-time for Morinas, as the home side went for a more attacking line-up.
There was a real scare on 42 minutes. Another De Rossi error in midfield sparked a Lithuanian counter-attack and Buffon had to make himself as big as possible to beat away the shot from Kalonas.
Stankevicius smashed an incredibly powerful free kick through the wall and almost knocked Buffon back into his own goal.
But just as Lithuania were really fighting back, Quagliarella struck again with a truly sensational strike! He hooked down with his right foot and hit a magnificent dipping finish into the far top corner. He has made Samp fans accustomed to stunning goals and is now continuing that trend for the Italy squad.
Gedgaudas came on for Paulauskas, but there was a curious moment when the start of the second half was delayed by several minutes. Both squads were on the field, but the Dutch officials turned up late.
Italy threatened again with Massimo Oddo's cross from the right cleared just before Inzaghi could pounce. Quagliarella was also very impressive in defence, coming back to help Oddo double up on opposition attacks down that right flank.
The Lithuanian goalkeeper got down to smother a Pirlo effort from the edge of the area, then the Milan midfielder threaded through for Di Natale, but once again the Udinese star's finishing left a lot to be desired and he stroked it over the bar.
Yet there was some complacency at the back and Danilevicius pounced on a mistake, eventually crowded out inside the area by Zambrotta and Marco Materazzi.
Donadoni's first substitution introduced Gennaro Gattuso for the disappointing De Rossi. As he is on a booking, the midfielder risked missing the crucial game with France in September.
Quagliarella sought a hat-trick, drilling inches wide of the near post. Inzaghi went even closer, as he hooked down a long Pirlo pass over the defence, but slipped at the crucial moment and the goalkeeper was able to recover.
Massimo Ambrosini took over from Perrotta, who was not 100 per cent fit, meaning there were four Milan players in the line-up.
Di Natale and Zambrotta combined down the left and Gattuso carried on the move for Inzaghi to spring the offside trap, but the angled drive dribbled across the face of goal.
Alessandro Del Piero earned his 83rd cap, coming on for Di Natale in the final 17 minutes and had a great chance, but slipped as he cut back past a defender.
Lithuania were not entirely out of it yet and a Labukas header looped over the far top corner. The same player later went into the book for a very late tackle on Materazzi.
