Alex takes the points Sunday 3 June, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alessandro Del Piero insists the media were wrong to expect a huge goal haul in the storms of the Faroe Islands.
“The last five minutes we were very disappointed to run such risks, as we had barely let them see the ball before then. At least the carpenter has his place in history,” he said after Italy’s 2-1 away victory.
Rogvi Jacobsen scored only the Faroe Islands’ second goal in this Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and is a carpenter by trade.
“This match had been painted as a walkover, but when we saw the state of the pitch, the terrible weather conditions and the fact the side was not entirely improvising, we saw that really was not the case.”
Nonetheless, the three points send Italy just two behind Group B leaders France, who saw off Ukraine 2-0.
“The result and France’s win over Ukraine puts us in second place despite the tough start we had a year ago. So this is definitely a positive evening for Italy.”
Del Piero had been fielded in a 4-2-3-1 system, but admits the tactic didn’t go entirely according to plan.
“At the start the movement went well and we could certainly have finished a lot better. Unfortunately it wasn’t easy for me to find space between the lines, as the rain slowed the ball and the Faroe Islands put 10 men behind the ball permanently.
“The idea was to find space between the lines, but as they went so very deep there really wasn’t a gap! Even then, had we scored a third goal earlier then it could have been far more.”
The Juventus captain, Aimo Diana and Cristiano Lucarelli wasted glorious scoring opportunities, while Andrea Pirlo’s free kick was turned on to the upright.
Diana disappointed by comeback Saturday 2 June, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aimo Diana made his Azzurri comeback, but admits it wasn’t the best performance in the Faroe Islands.
“We certainly didn’t play a great game. We knew it wasn’t going to be simple, as when it comes to facing teams like this there isn’t quite as much motivation and you risk losing face,” he said after Italy’s 2-1 victory in the Euro 2008 qualifiers.
“I don’t think that concentration lapsed. Rather everyone wanted score today and thought they could against the Faroe Islands. At half-time we discussed the lack of pace and that allowed them to come back and defend with all 11 men. It wasn’t easy to find space down the flanks in that situation.”
Pippo Inzaghi’s brace had given them a comfortable 2-0 lead and poor finishing – including a great chance for Diana – allowed the home side to get a goal back late on.
This puts Italy in second place in Group B, on 13 points behind France with 15 following Les Bleus’ 2-0 win over Ukraine.
“We got the three points and won the match, so now we must rest and prepare for Wednesday’s game. It will be more difficult than today, but Italy are the World Cup winners and must go to Lithuania for the victory.
“Every match is different. I have seen players who won the World Cup give everything they had today. Obviously some quality players are going to have a little more difficulty on a pitch like this.”
Canna: Stay concentrated! Saturday 2 June, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro is upset at conceding in the Faroe Islands, but says it was his own men’s fault for losing focus.
“These things happen. Obviously it never makes you happy to concede a goal, but we created plenty of chances and everyone was pushing forward to find the third, but that was a mistake as we lost concentration at the back,” noted the defender.
The Azzurri’s 2-1 victory in the Faroe Islands still sends them into second place behind France in the Euro 2008 qualifying Group B, a result secured thanks to Filippo Inzaghi’s brace.
“Pippo is a guarantee! He is in good shape physically, psychologically and has rediscovered his eye for goal. I am happy for him.
“We got three important points tonight, are second in Group B and must look at the positive aspects.
Having seen how much Italy struggled to get through the Faroe part-timers tonight, Lithuania will be buoyed for their qualifier on Wednesday.
“Lithuania have every right to give it a go, as everyone does, but no matches are easy nowadays. Our compliments to the Faroe Islands for scoring, but we needed these points.”
Captain Cannavaro also had a closing message for Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta, who have walked away from the international scene.
“These are intelligent lads who know that the Nazionale is important. We are waiting for them.”
Oddo apologises for error Sunday 3 June, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Massimo Oddo has explained what went wrong when the Faroe Islands scored an historic goal against Italy.
“Unfortunately it was three against one and I didn’t spot in time the fact he had lost his marker,” said the defender.
The Milan man was closest to Rogvi Jacobsen when he turned his towering header into the back of the net – only their second goal in qualifying.
Italy emerged 2-1 winners, but it was far from a vintage performance in the northern storms, particularly from the forwards.
“It was a match in which we created so many chances, but when you don’t put it in the back of the net then you do run risks at the end. We poured forward a little too gung-ho and that left them room to counter.”
Cristiano Lucarelli, Alessandro Del Piero and Aimo Diana all missed open goals, while Andrea Pirlo’s free kick was tipped on to the woodwork.
“I would not make a drama out of it. You are bound to run into this type of problem with a side like the Faroe Islands. We didn’t underestimate them, we just failed to kill them off earlier,” insisted Oddo.
