Dutch aim to prove Cruyff wrong with Under-21 winAMSTERDAM, June 22 (Reuters) - The Netherlands defend their European Under-21 title against Serbia in Groningen on Saturday, with a debate raging over coach Foppe de Haan's decision to ditch the traditional Dutch 4-3-3 formation.
The "Young Orange" team seem to have been well-served by the 4-4-2 formation so far, having won their group stage and topping the tournament scoring table with six goals.
However Johan Cruyff has hit out at de Haan warning him not to meddle with tradition as it could be "extremely damaging for Dutch football."
In his column in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf Cruyff wrote this week: "4-3-3 is the lifeline of the Dutch game."
De Haan responded that the Dutch need to look forward and not keep hanging on to the past.
"You always have to listen to Cruyff, but he isn't always right," he said of the country's greatest ever player.
Serbia, who won Group B and beat Belgium 2-0 in the semi-finals, look to be in confident mood, whereas some Dutch players have complained of fatigue after their 120-minute semi-final clash against England which ended in a 13-12 marathon penalty shoot-out.
Dutch captain Ron Vlaar is ruled out with a knee injury, leaving Daniel de Ridder the only likely survivor from the Dutch team which took the Under-21 title in Portugal last year.
Serbia boast four players who are already senior internationals and coach Miroslav Djukic has explained his players offer experience beyond their years because of the financial situation in Serbia.
"In our country we don't have enough money to buy players so we have to develop them ourselves while the best players are bought by foreign clubs."
"That means that younger players get the chance to play in the first team at their clubs earlier than they might have done elsewhere, and means in turn that they're ready for international football when the chance comes."
Serbia however are going into the final under a cloud and face a UEFA disciplinary hearing on July 12 following charges of racist chants from their followers towards England's black players last week.
UEFA have stressed their zero tolerance towards racism again this week with the referee permitted to stop the game if there are any incidents of racist abuse during the match.
