Barcelona Not New To Final Day Showdown
16th June 2007
Barcelona are used to risky living...and surviving in the end.
Leaving the La Liga decider till the final day is not a new expereince for Catalan giants, Barcelona or their fans. Almost half of the La Liga titles, 8 out of 18 to be precise, were won by the Blaugrana on the final day of the La Liga, the most recent which was three times between 1992 and 1994.
Barca had a knock-off on Real Madrid on two of those occassions in 1992 and 1993 respectively, when Tenerife broke every Los Merengues heart, while Valencia were involved in the 1994 the final showdown on the dot of time in the 90th minute after a penalty kick miss against them by their opponents secured the title for Barca.
A popular, humour laced saying among Barca fans, especially in the pre-1995 era often goes to say that Barca fans are used to suffering, a saying which reflects the agony and eventual triumph of the Catalans and their fans when it comes to final day showdowns, as it now seems to have become a habit that died momentarily under Coaches Van Gaal and Rijkaard, when the titles were already secured before the final days.
The risky lifestyle of a final day showdown habit dates as far back as 1929, When Barcelona triumphed over Real Madrid who came second. This was followed by four more inctances between 1948 and 1960, and was shaken off till the recent spate between 1992 and 1994.
Once more in 2007, Barca find themselves in that position again, and wil have to reach out to history for a repeat performance of past final day showdowns that have been in favour of the Spanish Giants.
