Schuster Speaks Freely About Real Madrid Bernd Schuster has given a frank interview about his views on Real Madrid amid all the rumours that he is set to take over from Fabio Capello as coach next month.
The German trainer has been widely tipped to be favoured by president Ramón Calderón, but the decision on who is in charge next term lies with sporting director Predrag Mijatovic.
While negotiations continue behind the scenes the current Getafe coach spoke freely about Madrid and gave his opinions on the summer rebuilding plans.
One telling comment though came when he was asked what was the thing that he would not change about the club at the moment.
"The only thing that Real Madrid do not need now is another coach," Schuster stated.
Despite that, he moved onto look at who is leaving the club and who is joining and is pleased to see Christoph Metzelder arriving to bolster the defence.
"He is a good central defender, although people may not know much about him," the former Madrid, Barça and Atlético midfielder continued.
"After playing at a young age in the World Cup Finals in Japan and Korea he has endured some physical problems, but if he comes without those then he will be a very important player."
David Beckham's exit was also a sore point and Schuster clearly believes that los Merengues made a mistake in allowing the England international to escape.
"I think that Beckham will become bored in Los Angeles," he said. "He could have played for two or three more years at Real Madrid.
"It is a shame that he has gone."
After being linked to both Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaká towards the end of last term, Schuster has no doubts about who he would rather sign.
"Kaká is better in the build-up and Cristiano is a specialist down the wings," the coach stated.
"Cristiano depends on those around him like Kaká does, but Kaká is more important to his team."
Raúl's future at the club is another hot topic after the striker had an indifferent season as Capello often asked him to drop back and play deeper.
The Madrid captain has also been said to have too much power in the dressing room, but Schuster believes that not all the stories are true.
"The thing with Raúl is exaggerated," he said. "He is a Madrid person, it is his club and he wants to retire with them, like Paolo Maldini at AC Milan.
"They have used him and not in his favourite position because he is a penalty box player, like Emiliio Butragueño was.
"It is a very complicated matter."
When asked whether he could use the same style that has brought him success at his previous clubs, Schuster was adamant that should he take over at the Bernabéu he would not change.
"Everyone knows how my teams play," he stated. "If you let the players do what they like and allow them to play the ball then everyone must be receptive to that.
"If I have managed to to achieve that at Levante, Xerez and Getafe, which are modest clubs, and I could not do it with Madrid then I would say that I know nothing about football."
