Juventus director of sport Alessio Secco has reassured fans that talismanic captain Alessandro Del Piero will be staying with the club.
The 32-year-old’s current contract is set to expire at the end of June 2008, but he had been expected to sign a new deal this summer.
While problems were anticipated in agreeing terms with David Trezeguet, Mauro Camoranesi and Pavel Nedved, there was little indication that Pinturricchio would prove such a stumbling block.
However, Secco is insistent that an agreement will be reached even if several meetings are needed.
“The fans shouldn’t worry because we will work out a deal,” he maintained. “We didn’t expect to come to an agreement immediately.
"Maybe it won’t even happen at the second meeting, but the right time will come. Juve want to keep Del Piero.”
There is also widepsread agreement in the Bianconeri dressing room that Alex is crucial and that the current issues will be resolved.
“Del Piero is an idol, a great player and a great man,” Juve hitman Raffaele Palladino stated.
“He is the standard bearer who represents the history of Juventus. Alessandro inspires us young players on and off the pitch.”
Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon seemed in little doubt that Del Piero would stay when interviewed after Tuesday evening’s TIM Trophy.
“Alessandro is our franchise player and no-one here thinks that there will be a problem,” he responded briefly.
