Buffon: Juve Year Zero Sunday 22 July, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gianluigi Buffon believes the season in Serie B was a necessary “purgatory” to pick up where they left off – as winners.
“This is Juventus Year Zero. We are starting again after a year of, let us say a purifying form of purgatory,” he told Sky Italia.
“I am happy to hear that our opponents have great respect for a Juve that has returned to Serie A. It means you cannot cancel history with a season in Serie B.”
The Bianconeri had won two consecutive titles before they were demoted in the Calciopoli scandal and stripped of those trophies.
Now they are back in the top flight and Buffon is gunning for the reigning champions Inter – a side he was reportedly close to joining this summer.
“They are the strongest and most complete squad who have everything needed to repeat their success a second time. No, wait, third!”
The goalkeeper joked that the 2005-06 Scudetto was handed to Inter, who had finished third, after Calciopoli affected both Juventus and Milan.
“We will make life very difficult for Inter, that I can say for sure.”
Buffon was asked to comment on the news that Francesco Totti has retired from international duty at the age of almost 31.
“I have known Francesco since we were in the same Under-14 squad, so we will have a chance to talk.
“I cannot say anything about his previous choices or this one. He proved with this decision that he was consistent with what he said a year ago. As for what is right and what is wrong, that I shall never be drawn on.”
Ranieri: Juve are winners Saturday 21 July, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Claudio Ranieri feels that his new-look Juventus are “a winning side” that cannot wait to get stuck into Serie A.
“These lads are winners and cannot just play to take part,” said the Coach. “At the moment we know that there are other teams ahead of us, seeing as we have a very new squad, but we’re working on it.”
Inter dominated a tournament shorn of Juve and with many clubs affected by Calciopoli penalties, but this coming season it begins on a level playing field.
“We have a very high level of self-esteem. Everyone cannot wait to compare themselves to the rest of Serie A’s greats. After all, the desire to challenge has always been the hallmark of Juventus.”
Ranieri hopes they can become the first team in Italian football history to win the Scudetto straight after their promotion.
“Man first dreams and then acts to realise that dream,” explained the philosophical tactician. “Our fans are dreaming a great deal. My players are winners and they cannot help but play to win.
“It is also true we have a new squad that is not stronger than two years ago and that others have filled the gaps in their teams. Everyone is curious to see just how strong Juve are. That includes me.”
The Bianconeri take on the Chinese Olympic side in a friendly on Sunday and Ranieri gave clues as to his experiments.
“We’ll field two different teams, one with a 4-3-3 and the other 4-4-2. Gianluigi Buffon and Mauro Camoranesi are out, I hope to include Alessandro Del Piero during the match.”
