Serie A: 2007-08 at a glance
With the new Serie A season about to kick-off, Paul Watson gives you the low-down on what each team is aiming for and what they can realistically expect to achieve
AtalantaEnded their spell as a yo-yo club with an amazing eighth-placed finish last term. The Orobici have only made cosmetic changes over the summer and may need to rely on Cristiano Doni’s renaissance continuing. Inspirational boss Stefano Colantuono is gone and the architect of the Chievo miracle Luigi Del Neri steps in. Can he give last season’s fairytale another chapter?
Aim: Mid-table
Prediction: May fall flat, but shouldn’t get dragged into a relegation dogfight
CagliariDisappointed last season and were lucky not to find themselves sucked into the relegation quicksand. Having lost 14-goal captain David Suazo to Inter and proven hitman Mauro Esposito to Roma, the Isolani have put their trust in young gun Robert Acquafresca. An inexperienced side could face a nervy campaign.
Aim: Survival
Prediction: Time to start panicking – the Sardinians are strong relegation candidates
CataniaThe Elefanti enjoyed a stunning start to their first campaign in Serie A for 20 years, but fell away after the tragic riots against Palermo and needed final-day heroics to avoid the drop. Solid defender Christian Terlizzi is a useful addition, but they have it all to do if they are to deliver another top-flight survival.
Aim: Survival
Prediction: A difficult second season to end in disappointment
EmpoliThe ultimate example of substance over style, Gigi Cagni’s side stunned everyone by grabbing a UEFA Cup spot last term. A side without stars, they lost the closest thing they had to one when Sergio Almiron joined Juventus. However, four Bianconeri arrive on loan, including Azzurrini star Sebastian Giovinco and the cycle is set to begin again.
Aim: UEFA Cup qualification
Prediction: Likely to fade into mid-table mediocrity
FiorentinaThe Viola fought a massive 15-point Calciopoli deduction last time around to secure a UEFA Cup berth. The Luca Toni era is over, but Adrian Mutu and Giampaolo Pazzini are ready to step up with the aid of Christian Vieri cameos. Boss Cesare Prandelli is possibly the most talented in the peninsula and will be setting his sights on the Champions League.
Aim: Champions League qualification
Prediction: Will have to settle for the UEFA Cup again
GenoaOne of Italy’s most celebrated sides return to Serie A after a 12-year hiatus. The Grifoni have a reputation for goal fests and secured promotion from the Cadetti in spite of their relatively leaky defence. The loss of star stopper Domenico Criscito may be felt, given the shortage of new faces.
Aim: Survival
Prediction: Bid to retain top-flight status could go down to the wire
InterLast season’s Scudetto was a dress rehearsal – now it’s time for the real thing. Undoubtedly the strongest side in Italy, the Nerazzurri now have real depth and a reserve squad that could easily finish in the top half. It is hard to see Roberto Mancini’s men being stopped, but they were never pressured last year and the Biscione have a history of fluffing their lines on the big stage.
Aim: Scudetto and Champions League glory
Prediction: Title favourites, but Europe may elude them once more
JuventusThe Old Lady returns home to Serie A and opinion is divided as to where she will sit at calcio’s top table. The squad isn’t in the same League as the Bianconeri’s all-conquering 2005-06 roster, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable to suggest that they could break into the top four.
Aim: Scudetto
Prediction: Will have to fight hard for a Champions League place
LazioDelio Rossi is a miracle worker. The Biancocelesti boss knows how to inspire a Herculean effort from a side without stars and led Lazio into the Champions League last term. He has the same task again this time around and may not have the resources to keep the Aquile from sliding back into mid-table.
Aim: Champions League qualification
Prediction: European implosion followed by a UEFA Cup finish
LivornoLife after talismanic captain Cristiano Lucarelli will be made much easier by new signings Francesco Tavano and Diego Tristan. The Tuscans have relied far too heavily on the No 99 in recent seasons and now could either grow as a side or fail miserably. The pressure is on for inexperienced boss Fernando Orsi.
Aim: UEFA Cup qualification
Prediction: Ups and downs will add up to a mid-table finish
MilanEuropean glory last term conveniently erased the memories of a disappointing Serie A campaign. This time Carlo Ancelotti must do better domestically, but there was no real big pre-season swoop. Alexandre Pato arrives in January, but the Diavolo’s hopes may rest with more experienced stars such as Kaka and Ronaldo. The ageing defence hasn’t been addressed and could prove an Achilles Heel.
Aim: Scudetto
Prediction: A close second and abdication of European throne
NapoliNaples awaits the Vesuviani’s return with baited breath, but they may have to settle for consolidation. Argentine starlet Ezequiel Lavezzi is an exciting addition, but much will depend on the back line’s ability to adapt to stronger opposition. Even the Partenopei’s notoriously demanding fans will surely settle for mid-table respectability.
Aim: Survival
Prediction: Bottom of the top half or top of the bottom half
PalermoAfter a dream start to the season, the Sicilians fell away badly and missed out on a Champions League spot. With Amauri healthy and Fabrizio Miccoli by his side there could be fireworks, but will the same old defensive frailties manifest themselves? Stefano Colantuono may sort the back line out after his good work with Atalanta last year, but he is about to experience a kind of pressure he has never felt before.
Aim: Champions League qualification
Prediction: Should at least clinch a UEFA Cup spot
ParmaIt’s hard to believe that during the 1990s Parma were bagging European honours. These days the Ducali are happy just to plug away in the top flight and were it not for some Claudio Ranieri magic last term they would be preparing for life in the Second Division. The main excitement in pre-season was speculation that Azzurrini star striker Giuseppe Rossi may arrive. He didn’t, and a spot in mid-table has been reserved.
Aim: Climb into the top half
Prediction: A dull campaign in mid-table
RegginaThe plucky minnows fought incredible odds to see off a 15-point penalty last year. However, with boss Walter Mazzarri moving on to pastures new and revelatory striker Rolando Bianchi relocating to Manchester, things look bleak. New Coach Massimo Ficcadenti is the man largely responsible for Verona’s slump into Serie C. It is hard to see the young boss’ maiden Serie A season being anything other than a world of pain.
Aim: Survival
Prediction: The end of the road for the plucky Calabrians
RomaThe Scudetto was an unrealistic aspiration last term and still seems beyond Luciano Spalletti’s squad. However, while much of the pre-season talk revolved around the loss of Cristian Chivu, the signing of Ludovic Giuly was inspired and the Giallorossi look stronger than they were 12 months ago. Milan are within reach, but the real battle could be against Juventus and it’s one the capital club will believe they can win.
Aim: Scudetto
Prediction: Second or third should be within their grasp
SampdoriaMediocrity may be a thing of the past for the Blucerchiati after some inspired pre-season moves. Talented striker Fabio Quagliarella has left, but Samp will be more than happy to have Antonio Cassano and Vincenzo Montella in his place. The new man at the helm is Walter Mazzarri. Having guided Reggina to safety in spite of all obstacles he is undoubtedly a gifted Coach and can deliver overdue glory.
Aim: UEFA Cup qualification
Prediction: To clinch European football comfortably
SienaThe Tuscan minnows pulled off yet another trademark escape last year and did so more comfortably than usual. However, this summer’s scavenging mission has been less than impressive and their goal drought is surely set to continue. New boss Andrea Mandorlini doesn’t have predecessor Mario Beretta’s nous and the dark clouds seem to be gathering.
Aim: Survival
Prediction: The Robur may be sentenced to Serie B
TorinoMade hard work of avoiding the drop on their Serie A return largely due to a terrifying impotence in front of goal. David Di Michele has arrived to remedy the flaccid front line, but he is banned for three months for his betting habits. Local boy Alessandro Rosina is an exciting talent, but ex-Sampdoria Coach Walter Novellino has his work cut out to haul this squad out of the bottom half.
Aim: Mid-table
Prediction: Should survive, but it certainly won’t be pretty
UdineseSince reaching the Champions League in 2004-05, the Zebrette have embraced the role of masters of mediocrity. The arrival of potentially prolific striker Fabio Quagliarella is a boost and boss Pasquale Marino will be a breath of fresh air after a string of forgettable tacticians. Will the newcomers be enough to wake the Zebrette from their slumber in the comfortable armchair of mid-table? Probably not.
Aim: UEFA Cup qualification
Prediction: Another season in the middle of the pack
