Don tracks Azzurri ex-pats Saturday 11 August, 2007

Roberto Donadoni is set for a tour of Europe to keep an eye on Italy’s migrant population, including Rolando Bianchi, Luca Toni and Giuseppe Rossi.
“I will follow everyone with the utmost attention,” said the Azzurri Coach. “There’s nothing unusual about it. After all, the tacticians of Brazil or Argentina have it much worse than me.”
It has been a summer of globalisation in Italian football, as players like Cristiano Lucarelli and Fabio Grosso have chosen experiences overseas.
This afternoon former Fiorentina striker Toni will make his Bundesliga debut with Bayern Munich.
“It will be strange seeing him in the Bundesliga. From a selfish point of view I would have preferred he stay in Serie A, but this is fine. Bayern are one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. Toni will have new motivation to score many more goals.”
Lucarelli has gone to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine, a decision that many say represents an end to his Azzurri hopes.
“Why would that be?” insisted Donadoni. “We spoke and it was not a surprising choice. I have called players older than Lucarelli and the doors to the Nazionale are open to everyone.”
Rossi is not new to foreign shores and, after his success at Manchester United, the youngster scored on his debut for Villarreal last night in a friendly against Braga.
Others such as Manchester City’s £8.8m signing Bianchi and AZ Alkmaar arrival Graziano Pellè sought first team football elsewhere.
“This is not a blow for Italian football. It could be a great opportunity for these players to grow and complete their professional portfolio. I see nothing dramatic in the departure of these talents.
“How many promising foreigners have become champions in Italy? For example, when Kaka arrived at Milan he was not the same player he is today.”
Next Saturday Donadoni will announce the squad for Italy’s friendly with Hungary on August 22 at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest.
“Expect no real surprises. This is not the time for experiments, we have to qualify for Euro 2008.”
It will be the first since Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta put the final word on their international careers.
“In the media there was a lot of confusion over their decision to no longer wear the Azzurri jersey,” pointed out Donadoni.
“It should have opened up a different debate. Perhaps it is time to reorganise Serie A, as 20 teams are too many. The top stars reach the end of the season drained and it’s no wonder international tournaments no longer produce spectacular football.”
Yet the Italian championship also kicks off later than any other – on August 26 – and by the time they face France in a Euro 2008 qualifier on September 8, Les Bleus will have five rounds behind them compared to the Azzurri’s two.
“I hope everyone remembers that when it comes to the game,” joked the Coach.
Above all, the tie has become a grudge match after Raymond Domenech’s scurrilous accusations of match-fixing in a qualifier for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
“The French Federation has distanced itself from the comments made by Domenech. I don’t think there’s anything more to add than that.”
