Our next opponents: Werder Bremen
Watching others celebrate is no fun. Werder Bremen experienced this twice in the last seven days. Coach Thomas Schaaf’s team lost the UEFA Cup Final in Istanbul 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk and were on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline as VfL Wolfsburg secured their first ever Bundesliga title.
Fully focussed on Berlin
Saturday’s Cup Final represents the last opportunity for Bayer 04 and Werder to end the current campaign with a success after both sides failed to achieve their targets in the Bundesliga: Bayer 04 in ninth slot with 49 points and Bremen one place behind with four less points. This Werder’s worst ever finish in the ten years that Thomas Schaaf has been at the helm. “Of course, we were very disappointed to lose in the UEFA Cup Final. But we’ve got over our initial frustration and are now fully focussed on Berlin,” declares general manager Klaus Allofs.
In contrast to the game in Istanbul, Werder will be happy to see the return of their outstanding playmaker Diego and Hugo Almeida. “These two, and Diego in particular, give us more options,” explains Allofs aware of the extraordinary ability of his Brazilian star.
Three Bundesliga sides knocked out
Bremen’s route to the Final saw Werder play all their games away from home and in the last three rounds they overcame strong opposition. In the semi-final against Hamburg SV, keeper Tim Wiese produced a match-winning display as he saved three penalties.
