Don hopes for Scots slip-up Tuesday 16 October, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberto Donadoni urged Italy’s new boys to make the most of the friendly test with South Africa, but admits his attention is on Georgia-Scotland.
Although the Azzurri will be playing their own match in Siena, their Euro 2008 qualifying hopes are in the balance when the Scots travel to Tbilisi on Wednesday evening.
“In their last game, South Africa caused problems for Scotland. I hope Georgia can do the same. I am accustomed to counting on my own strength, but a little favour in Tbilisi would not be a bad thing,” smiled the tactician.
Scotland currently lead Group B with 24 points, one ahead of Italy and two in front of France. Georgia have no hope of qualifying, as they have just seven points from 10 games.
The situation is very tight, especially as the World Cup winners travel to Glasgow on November 17.
“It would be fun to play for everything in 90 minutes, but at the same time ugly to see a whole year’s work judged on the basis of one night,” added Donadoni.
After the 2-0 victory over Georgia, Italy will field many new faces for the friendly encounter with South Africa.
“I expect enthusiasm and collaboration from the players who are not used to wearing the Azzurri jersey. I think we will see team spirit from the lads.
“There should not be talk of an experimental Italy, because the Italy squad remains the Italy squad at all times. Because these players have never worked together before, we’ll need even more cohesion as a unit.”
Daniele De Rossi has been handed the captain’s armband, while he is expected to be joined in midfield by Fiorentina’s Riccardo Montolivo and Cagliari revelation Pasquale Foggia.
Italy (probable): Amelia; Zaccardo, Gamberini, Bonera, Chiellini; De Rossi, Montolivo, Foggia; Rosina, Mauri; Lucarelli
De Rossi captains new Italy Tuesday 16 October, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daniele De Rossi will captain Italy against South Africa on Wednesday, but insists that is not his proudest Azzurri moment.
“I am happy to wear the armband, but I am far prouder at my age to have notched up nearly 30 senior caps,” said the 24-year-old.
The Roma starlet leads out an experimental side for the friendly match with South Africa tomorrow evening and shoots down suggestions Italy have little strength in depth.
“The likes of Roberto Baggio, Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti only come along once every 10 years. Yet we have players who are capable of world class moves, like Pasquale Foggia, Antonio Di Natale and Fabio Quagliarella. That has always been the case for Italy and I am optimistic about the future.”
One of the new faces is Fiorentina’s former Under-21 international hero Riccardo Montolivo.
“I really like Montolivo and had already heard great things about him when he was at Atalanta and now he has blossomed. Florence is an ideal city for a young player and the club has other interesting figures like Giampaolo Pazzini, Marco Donadel and Kuzmanovic.
“Cesare Prandelli is an extraordinary Coach in this sense, much like Luciano Spalletti, and Roma do well to bring out what is best in the city.”
Italy boss Roberto Donadoni has assigned the shirt numbers for the South Africa friendly and captain De Rossi gets 10.
2 Zaccardo, 3 Mesto, 4 Chiellini, 5 Gamberini, 6 Paolo Cannavaro, 8 Palombo, 9 Rosina, 10 De Rossi, 11 Gilardino, 12 Curci, 13 Dossena, 14 Amelia, 16 Nocerino, 17 Foggia, 18 Montolivo, 19 Semioli, 20 Mauri, 25 Bonera, 26 Lucarelli.
