Sampdoria progress in the UEFA Cup after a nervy 1-1 draw with Hajduk Split at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris handed them a 2-1 aggregate win.
The Blucerchiati still had work to do, but came into this clash with a crucial 1-0 lead from the first-leg.
Clashes between the two sets of fans marred the build-up to the match and resulted in several poilce officers sustaining injuries.
Summer signing Vincenzo Montella, who scored the winner against Siena in Week 1, was handed his first start and made the decisive contribution.
It was a shaky start for the hosts as goalkeeper Antonio Mirante had to be at his best to deny Sinisa Linic after 15 minutes and a Mladen Pelaic header could hardly have been closer a minute later.
Croatia’s second side continued to dominate thanks to midfield wizardry from Florin Cernat, who is on loan from Dynamo Kiev, but against the run of play Doria won a penalty when Cristian Maggio was tripped in the box.
Montella was handed the ball and cooly sent ‘keeper Vjekoslav Tomic the wrong way before stroking home and starting his trademark Aeroplannino celebration.
The first half fizzled out and the second period provided little entertainment as the visitors seemed to have lost faith, with Montella closest to finding the net in the opening 20 minutes.
However, just as Samp seemed to be cruising through, Hajduk struck.
A free-kick from Bosnian Mirko Hrgovic found the net after clipping the post with seven minutes left and the Italians had to cling on as a goal would have sent the Croats through.
Nervous whistles echoed around the ground, but Walter Mazzarri’s men held their nerve and take their place in the first round proper.
