Donadoni blames Bayern Sunday 9 September, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberto Donadoni has blamed Bayern Munich for Luca Toni’s injury and looks ahead to Wednesday’s must-win match in Ukraine.
Toni had hoped to recover from a thigh strain in time to face France last night, but instead was ruled out of next week’s Euro 2008 qualifier as well, so Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta received a late call.
“It is a shame about Toni, as his injury is not serious, but it is painful,” explained the Italy Coach.
“As soon as he kicked the ball, he felt these bad twinges in his thigh. I think in Germany they underestimated the extent of the problem. I really doubt he will play the next game with Bayern Munich.”
The former Fiorentina hitman suffered the injury while scoring a goal in the Bundesliga a fortnight ago and the diagnosis was more and more serious as time went on.
Toni was much missed in the 0-0 draw with France on Saturday evening, as Pippo Inzaghi could not play the same tactical role and was often left isolated upfront.
“I have no regrets, as we could not do any more than that. We have to start learning our own limitations,” said Donadoni of the reigning world champions. “The important thing was not to lose that game.”
The San Siro showdown also saw several other players pick up injuries, but the Coach was more reassuring.
“Andrea Pirlo just got a knock to the ankle. Daniele De Rossi had a few problems in the closing stages, while Gianluca Zambrotta had cramp. Of course we will miss Gennaro Gattuso due to his ban, but overall we should recover.”
As Scotland have leapfrogged Italy into second place in Group B, Wednesday’s trip to Kiev becomes even more decisive than the match with France.
“I am not making calculations. I certainly will not be happy with the draw in Ukraine, as we are going there to win.
“Today my collaborator will arrive and give me the low-down on our next opponents, having watched them closely during their 1-1 draw in Georgia last night. That is when I will start to prepare the match.”
Vieira stunned by San Siro reception Sunday 9 September, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Patrick Vieira admits he was “shocked” by the hostility of the San Siro crowd and insisted there was no row with Inter over his injury.
The lead-up to last night’s Euro 2008 qualifier between Italy and France was fraught with tension after Coach Raymond Domenech’s touchline ban and midfielder Lassana Diarra’s comments that the Azzurri were “a nation of provokers and cheats.”
This inevitably led to an angry reaction from the fans, who jeered so loudly during the French national anthem that it was drowned out.
“I am quite shocked. I thought I knew the Italian public, but instead I was very surprised,” said the Inter star in ‘his’ stadium.
Vieira played the entire 90 minutes despite reports of Inter’s anger at his return to international duty so soon after sustaining another injury in his last game with Les Bleus in August.
“My fitness worries have passed and I felt no pain at all. I have not spoken to Roberto Mancini because there was no need to.
“I followed the timetable of the recovery process and everything is completely under control.”
Coach Domenech watched the 0-0 draw from the stands and shrugged off the hostile reception his side received.
“The jeers do not interest me. All that counts now is qualification and we are very happy with the result.”
Ribery: Toni absence was key Sunday 9 September, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Franck Ribery believes that it would have been a very different game had his Bayern Munich teammate Luca Toni played for Italy.
The Frenchman seemed content with the goalless draw at San Siro on Saturday evening, leaving Les Bleus on top of Euro 2008 qualifying group B.
“I have to admit that with Toni on the field it probably would have been a different game and much more difficult for us,” confessed the pacy player.
“He is a fantastic striker. An incredible hitman, but he can also play for the team, protect the ball and bring the rest of the squad forward. He is a crucial player for any side.”
Toni was hoping to recover from a muscular problem he sustained during a Bayern Munich match in the Bundesliga several weeks ago.
However, he will not be fit for next Wednesday’s trip to Ukraine either and has been sent home, replaced by Vincenzo Iaquinta.
Toni’s absence was felt all too clearly at San Siro, as Pippo Inzaghi did not have the same characteristics to suit the 4-1-4-1 system implemented by Coach Roberto Donadoni.
“Inzaghi is a very different player to Toni and has another style entirely,” explained Ribery.
“I have to say our defence did well and did not concede much space at all. I certainly believe that we would have had a lot more trouble if Toni had been there, though.”
The Italian Press has been very critical of the Azzurri’s performance, but the French media followed the line seemingly adopted by their team – playing for the draw.
“This is a point worth its weight in gold,” exclaimed L’Equipe, while Le Parisien and Le Journal du Dimanche noted the result was “an excellent draw” away to Italy.
