Italy’s injury crisis eases Tuesday 11 September, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Azzurri’s preparations for Wednesday’s key Euro 2008 qualifier in Kiev have been hampered by injury, but three star men are nearing recovery.
A ring-rusty Italy squad has been further weakened for their vital September encounters by a series of injuries to important players.
After only managing a 0-0 draw with France at the San Siro, Roberto Donadoni knows his men must deliver away to Ukraine, but remains short-staffed.
Luca Toni was ruled out of the game against France with an injury sustained playing for Bayern Munich and his chances of being involved against Ukraine are slim.
Having lost Marco Materazzi until December, Donadoni will be worried to see Gianluca Zambrotta and Christian Panucci less than fully fit and there are also question marks over Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi.
However, Azzurri doctor Andrea Ferretti has calmed fears in the peninsula by insisting that at least three of his patients will be ready for Wednesday.
“Pirlo and Zambrotta have been working seperately from the group on their respective problems. Andrea has a calf injury and Gianluca has muscle fatigue, but they are both recovering well,” Ferretti confirmed.
“De Rossi has blisters on his feet so he went to the gym instead of training, but that’s nothing to worry about – he’ll be fine.”
Toni is set for a late fitness test, but Donadoni is likely to employ a 4-2-3-1 formation with Pippo Inzaghi, Cristiano Lucarelli and Vincenzo Iaquinta set to compete for a lone striker role.
The Azzurri squad are set to touch down in Kiev in the early afternoon on Tuesday and will continue their preparations at the Stadio Olimpiyskiy.
De Rossi believes in Azzurri Tuesday 11 September, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Azzurri midfielder Daniele De Rossi admits that Wednesday’s clash against Ukraine is must-win, but believes the World champions’ class will tell.
After a 1-1 draw with France last weekend, Roberto Donadoni’s side have dropped to third in Group B and are in very real danger of failing to qualify for Euro 2008.
“We have to act now or Euro 2008 will slip out of our grasp,” De Rossi admitted to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Italy will face a determined Ukraine side in Kiev as Oleg Blokhin’s men failed to beat Georgia last Saturday and know that they need a win to keep their hopes of travelling to Austria and Switzerland alive.
However, the Italians will still be favourites as few can forget the 3-0 hammering they gave the Zhovto-Blakytni on route to last summer’s night of glory in Berlin.
“Ukraine aren’t France,” the Roma star stressed. “We just need to be a solid unit like we were in the World Cup and show our character and superior technical ability. We can bring home all three points.”
Ukraine-based hitman Cristiano Lucarelli seems more unnerved at the prospect of facing a squad that includes seven of his Shakhtar Donetsk teammates.
“As far as preparation is concerned, they are at least eight days further on and that does worry me a bit,” the ex-Livorno hero revealed.
“But suffering is in our DNA so we often find ourselves in this situation. I’m convinced we can triumph in Kiev, but the decisive game is against Scotland in Glasgow.”
Don defends under-fire Alex Monday 10 September, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Azzurri Coach Roberto Donadoni has defended Alessandro Del Piero against recent criticism from fans and the Press.
The Juventus talisman has been whistled by sections of the Bianconeri support this term and was jeered again in Italy’s stalemate with France on Saturday.
The 32-year-old has been far from his best in the last few weeks, but Donadoni still believes that he has a crucial role to play.
“He did everything he could,” the ex-Livorno tactician insisted. “People expect too much from him as they think he can always dribble round three players and score.”
Teammate Vincenzo Iaquinta has been drafted into the Azzurri squad for the pivotal battle against Ukraine on Wednesday, but is keen to deny that he is fighting Del Piero for a shirt.
“I don’t want to hear anything about a ballot between me and Alex,” he stressed. “It’s the same situation at Juve and there is never any friction because we are a united group.”
One man who knows exactly what Donadoni’s squad is up against is Shakhtar Donetsk marksman Cristiano Lucarelli, who will face several teammates.
“It will be tough because there is such enthusiasm and belief in the national side over there,” he explained.
“Donadoni has asked me to give him information on the seven of my colleagues who will be playing against us. We will be facing a really well prepared side.”
