Raúl celebrates 13 years since debuting against Zaragoza
Real Madrid captain Raúl González Blanco today celebrates 13 years since his First Division debut, and what a better way to have kicked off the festivities than by scoring what proved to be the winner in last night's match against Deportivo.
Many a match has gone by since 29 October 1994 when then Real Madrid manager Jorge Valdano gave a young 17-year old his debut in La Romareda against Zaragoza. If we just stick to the 3-2 defeat the Whites suffered, during which the 'rookie' missed three easy scores, we might conclude that Raúl González Blanco's door to success may have quickly been slammed shut.
But despite the score and missed opportunities, the player's attitude during the match was only the beginning of a brilliant career that has carried Raúl to the pinnacle of Spanish football.
Raúl has been an example of consistency throughout his meteoric rise to stardom. He has always known how to overcome the worst of times -such as last year's serious injury- with great professionalism and positive attitude. His more than 500 official appearances donning the white shirt have made him an icon for the Madrisista masses and a respected professional in every stadium around the world.
Thirteen years have passed since his First Team debut and his "I want to be number one, the best in the world." It wasn't just a line to appease the crowd, but a firm commitment by a young talent who promised to do whatever it took to fulfill that dream. Here are his numbers:
