Azzurri: It's a Don deal Tuesday 5 February, 2008 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberto Donadoni’s contract extension will be discussed straight after the Portugal friendly, confirmed the FIGC.
The Italy Coach’s current deal expires during the European Championships, which he qualified them for despite a shaky start.
“We will discuss the matter immediately after Italy-Portugal,” announced Federation President Giancarlo Abete (pictured).
It is believed there will be a two-year extension drawn up with an improvement in economic terms, but some of the details could be based on what happens in Euro 2008.
“The intent is there and we also both have the confidence we’ll reach an agreement. We will see if we need a written statement or just a handshake between people who are accustomed to respecting agreements.
“Is there a clause tying the extension to a good result in Euro 2008? First let me make my proposal to Donadoni,” added Abete, hinting that success in Austria and Switzerland is crucial for the tactician’s future.
Although the Azzurri won the 2006 World Cup, they exited Euro 2004 in the first round, a result that saw Giovanni Trapattoni leave the post.
Italy: Doubting Donadoni Tuesday 5 February, 2008 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Italy boss Roberto Donadoni says he trusts the FIGC’s promise of a new contract, but won’t accept a simple handshake deal.
This evening Federation President Giancarlo Abete refused to rule out the possibility that an extension would depend on how the Azzurri do at Euro 2008 and hinted a verbal agreement could be enough.
“The intent is there and we also both have the confidence we’ll reach an agreement. We will see if we need a written statement or just a handshake between people who are accustomed to respecting agreements.
“Is there a clause tying the extension to a good result in Euro 2008? First let me make my proposal to Donadoni,” added Abete.
The Coach is on board with this plan – but only to a degree, as his contract expires during the tournament.
“I am not one of those people who think words dissipate into the air, but certain things ought to be written down in black and white,” noted Donadoni.
“I trust the word I have been given and when the moment comes we will sit down and I will calmly evаluate the proposal of the FIGC.”
The negotiations should take place straight after Wednesday night’s friendly test against Portugal.
“For me Coaching is a wonderful thing, whether you are in charge of the Nazionale or a club. I must say what I have experienced in my 18 months with the Azzurri has made me happy.”
Donadoni was under fire from the Italian media and expected to be fired during the qualifying campaign, but the tide turned when a 2-1 victory in Scotland sent them into Euro 2008 by topping the group.
In the tournament itself this summer, the Azzurri will face France, Holland and Romania in the so-called Group of Death.
Italy: Portuguese peril Tuesday 5 February, 2008 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Italy cannot underestimate Portugal, who provide a test for the Euro 2008 clash with Romania, warns Roberto Donadoni.
On Wednesday evening the Azzurri will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s side on Swiss soil in Zurich, an apt location as this summer’s tournament will be held in Austria and Switzerland.
“In terms of experience and quality, this Portugal can be compared to Romania. I told the players to be very careful, as they risk being humiliated,” said the Coach.
“Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world and is improving, so he is at Kaka’s level now, even though saying he is the same as the Brazilian is stretching it.”
Italy are now on the road to Euro 2008 and are in the so-called Group of Death along with France, Holland and Romania. Would Donadoni be content just to get through the first round?
“To then go out in the quarter-finals, you mean? My character means I never settle for less. I have been in charge of the Italy squad with enthusiasm and desire.”
Yet he was on the chopping block before a 2-1 victory in Scotland booked their place in the competition.
“Of course there have been things I would’ve gladly avoided, but that is true of all jobs. This is my philosophy, I always seek the best.”
This is an opportunity for Donadoni to experiment with new faces and tactical systems, moving from the 4-3-2-1 to a Roma-style 4-2-3-1 led by Luca Toni.
Raffaele Palladino is set to repeat his Juventus switch to the right channel and Antonio Di Natale maintains his spot on the left, with Simone Perrotta likely to be the middle man.
An all-Milan central midfield duo of Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini should step aside for Daniele De Rossi in the second half, as the teams are allowed six substitutions.
Among those bound to appear are Genoa hitman Marco Borriello, who earned his debut Italy call-up after netting 12 Serie A goals this season.

Aug 31 kick-off for 2008-09 Tuesday 5 February, 2008 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2008-09 Serie A season will kick off on August 31 and Serie B could experiment new goalline technology.
The next top flight campaign, which follows the Euro 2008 tournament, will begin on the weekend of August 31, 2008.
Although not ready for the main stage, the Lega Calcio confirmed it will officially send a request to FIFA asking to experiment goalline technology in Serie B.
The system has been developed to tell whether the ball has completely crossed the line or not in controversial incidents.
It has already been tested out occasionally in the Coppa Italia, but this would be the first consistent use.
The Lega Calcio also expressed concern at the development of the Andy Webster case, in which the Hearts player bought out his contract a year early for just £150,000 in order to join Wigan rather than paying the £4.6m fee.
“We have to decide upon a common agreement of the regulations with the other Leagues and all the clubs,” warned President Antonio Matarrese of the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling.
“We must avoid this bombshell that could have even worse effects on the sport than the Bosman rule.”
Webster invoked a then little-known FIFA rule which allowed him to give Hearts 14 days’ notice since his contract had run for more than three years.
The Court of Arbitration agreed that he was entitled to do that, but that Hearts were due compensation since he didn't have just cause for terminating the contract unilaterally.
