Italy: Don's keeping calm Monday 11 February, 2008

Italy boss Roberto Donadoni reiterates his belief in Alessandro Del Piero and Antonio Cassano, but doesn’t want to discuss his contract extension.
The ex-Livorno tactician made waves with his squad to face Portugal last week when he snubbed Juventus captain Del Piero and in-form Sampdoria striker Cassano.
“I have spoken to Del Piero, just as I am constantly in contact with all the lads,” Donadoni told Mediaset Radio 1’s Controcampo.
“They know that it’s too early to be thinking about the squad list for Euro 2008, but I’m hoping to have more options than just Cassano and Piero.
“I’m happy that Cassano has found the right atmosphere where he is being well managed by his Coach and is thriving. He needs to keep giving his best and believing in himself.
“I have no doubts over his talent and his performances testify to his value. We just need to give him some time to show consistency, as it has only been four or five good games so far.”
The world champions won widespread performances for their comfortable 3-1 win over Portugal in Zurich and Donadoni admitted his satisfaction.
“Against Portugal we gave a demonstration that the players understand there are sacrifices involved with playing for the national side as well as advantages,” he insisted. “Last Wednesday evening was a show of professionalism.”
Inevitably, the discussion turned to Donadoni’s imminent contract talks with FIGC President Giancarlo Abete.
Abete has been keen to stress his belief that the current Azzurri boss is the future of the national side, but there are rumours that a new deal may involve a rescission clause should Italy fail to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2008.
“There has been lots of talk about my contract, but the only truth is that Abete wants to discuss things soon – the rest is just the Press,” Donadoni scowled.
“At the end of the game against Portugal I said nothing. When I talk with Abete it will be about facts rather than speculation.
“For now my thoughts are elsewhere. I know that I have the President’s trust and I have no reason to think otherwise.”
