Fiorentina Line Up Shock Diego Swoop

The Brazilian is rated as one of the most promising midfielders in world football and has a host of admirers.



He was close to joining Milan in 2004 but instead signed for Portuguese giants FC Porto. After an unhappy two years at the Dragao, he was snapped up by Bundesliga-outfit Werder Bremen.



This season Diego has been in sensational form and he is top-scorer in the German league with 10 goals to his name.



This has led to interest from a host of top Italian and European clubs, including Juventus, Roma and Real Madrid.



However now it seems that Fiorentina fancy their chances of signing the 22-year-old playmaker.



The Viola have lit up Serie A this campaign with their young and promising team, and believe that Diego will fit in perfectly with talents such as Giampaolo Pazzini, Riccardo Montolivo and Marco Donadel.

A possible problem in bringing Diego to the Stadio Franchi could be the club’s €1.5m salary cap. They would also probably need to guarantee qualification into next season’s Champions League, something which could prove tricky.



Diego first shot to fame in Brazil as a 17-year-old when he formed a devastating partnership at Santos with Real Madrid star Robinho. The duo led the team to the Brazilian Championship in 2002.

Ronaldo 'ready' for Milan return

Ronaldo is on the road to recovery and will train with Milan in Dubai from January 2, insists his doctor.

Il Fenomeno has been in Brazil for most of this month to undergo specialist treatment with Selecao consultant Jose Luis Runco in a bid to solve an injury crisis that has seen him make just one appearance since July 31.

“He had a first grade calf strain, but now it is healed and we are in the final phase of physiotherapy,” noted Runco.

“On January 2 he will be in Dubai to train alongside the other Milan players.”

This is reassuring news for the Rossoneri, who feared having to bring in another striker during the January transfer window to replace Ronaldo.

There had even been talk of an extended stay in Brazil with Flamengo so that he could rediscover his form.

Milan will begin a special mid-season training camp in Dubai on January 2 to prepare for the rest of the campaign in the best possible physical condition.

They had a similar routine last year and, after a poor start, went on to win the Champions League and finish in the top four of Serie A.

This camp will also see Alexandre Pato join the team for the first time, as he will be eligible to play in official competition from 2008.


Ballardini 'can save Cagliari'

Cagliari have had a disastrous season packed with controversy and in-fighting, but new Coach Davide Ballardini is “convinced we can do well.”

The tactician is the third man on the Stadio Sant’Elia bench this season after Marco Giampaolo and Nedo Sonetti were fired.

Sonetti had resigned in the week before Christmas, but when Giampaolo refused to return, accepted another game with the club. That 5-1 defeat at Fiorentina also proved to be his last.

“I know these players because I already trained them at Cagliari and other clubs,” explained Ballardini in his presentation Press Conference.

“If I have come back then it is because I am convinced we can do well.”

This is Ballardini’s second stint with the Sardinians, as he was sacked after four draws and five defeats from September to November 2005.

“The team is built on solid and organised foundations. All we have been missing are the results.”

Cagliari are propping up the table with just 10 points from 17 Serie A games and are already five points adrift of the safety zone.

Ballardini’s arrival is the latest sea-change for a club that has also been wracked by in-fighting and controversy, with Pasquale Foggia accused of organising an attack on teammate Davide Marchini in a bar.

“I have some tactical ideas, but I want everyone to give their best. The three strikers are young and talented.

“Foggia is a great player, he needs to grow in every aspect of his game. He has excellent quality and I would like for him to show that in a Cagliari jersey.”

Giuseppe Rossi has proved to be one of the revelations of the season so far in La Liga. Richard Godden wonders why one of the big Italian clubs didn’t gamble on the Azzurrini ace last summer
Last summer Milan spent in excess of £15m to bring Alexandre Pato to San Siro. The kid nicknamed ‘The Duck’ might go on to be one of the world’s best players – just as Carlo Ancelotti and Silvio Berlusconi are predicting – yet it’s unlikely that he will save the Rossoneri’s Serie A season.

But why didn’t they sign Giuseppe Rossi when he was made available by Manchester United for just £7m, although admittedly with a buy-back clause inserted by the Red Devils? They spent a similar amount on Brazilian midfielder Emerson, who I consider to be a poor excuse for a footballer, so why couldn’t they have brought in someone who would actually aid their team?

Instead, the former Parma ace is currently lighting up El Madrigal and has found the back of the net on seven occasions in the Spanish Primera Liga – not bad going for a kid who is not what you would describe as an out-and-out striker. In fact, his deep-lying role would perfectly complement the poaching game of Pippo Inzaghi or Alberto Gilardino, both of whom have struggled in Serie A this term.

But it’s not just Milan who should’ve taken a punt on the American-born hitman. Roma have also looked lacking in the striking department in the absence of Francesco Totti, with Mirko Vucinic seemingly incapable of recreating his Champions League form in League action. Would £7m spent on Rossi really have hit the Giallorossi’s bank balance that hard?

Back in the August issue of Calcio Italia, we took a look at the most promising youngsters in Italian football. Of the eight experts polled, seven picked Rossi in their top three, making him a comfortable winner ahead of the highly-rated Alberto Aquilani and Giampaolo Pazzini.

The likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Pierluigi Casiraghi have also talked up his ability, but for some reason the big boys were still reluctant to move for him. Perhaps it is karma’s way of punishing him for walking out on Parma’s youth squad, because I certainly can’t think of any other reason why he isn’t lighting up Serie A on a weekly basis.
