Barça Target Summer Benzema Raid

Barcelona are set to make Lyon striker Karim Benzema their number one summer target should they decide to let go of Ronaldinho or Samuel Eto'o.



zoom - galleria Barcelona currently lie seven points behind Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table and sporting director Txiki Begiristain has been tasked with identifying a new generation of players to replace those associated with Rijkaard's early years in charge at the Camp Nou.

Barça are open to the possibility of selling Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o in the summer if he can find suitable long-term replacements and the money generated from the sale of those two players would certainly put them in a position to bid on almost any player in the world.

According to El Mundo, top of Begiristain's list is Lyon's twenty-year old prodigy Karim Benzema, on whom Barça have already tried to negotiate a first refusal option with their French counterparts.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas was having none of that attempt to close the market on Benzema, but Barcelona are preparing a massive bid for the young striker in the summer, which they feel should be enough to prise him away from the Stade Gerland.

A number of clubs from across Europe have been monitoring the progress of Benzema, who has burst to prominence in Ligue 1 and the Champions League this season with a string of highly impressive performances and Barcelona will certainly not be alone if they do decide to launch a bid.

Arsenal, AC Milan and Real Madrid have all been linked with Benzema in the past and are likely to be among those bidding for his services if Lyon indicate a willingness to sell.

Aulas is well known for sticking to his guns when it comes to transfers and has negotiated large deals for Michael Essien (36 million euros), Mahamadou Diarra (26 million) and Eric Abidal (15 million) in recent years.

The suggestion is that a bid somewhere in the region of 40 million Euros may be enough to force Aulas to part with Lyon's crown jewel and it will be interesting to see if Barcelona are prepared to pay such a fee to secure their man come the summer.

Ronaldinho Back In Action Next Week

Ronaldinho is set to be given the green light to action next week and could be available to play against Osasuna at the beginning of February.



zoom - galleria The Brazilian supestar has yet to appear for Barcelona since the start of the New Year as he has been recuperating from a knee injury.

Barça TV announced that his recovery programme is close to reaching a conclusion and the club's medical staff are hopeful of allowing him to play next week.

"The pain in the tendonin his the left knee have disappeared and, therefore, he will be given medical clearance to play again from the start of next week," a club statement read.

"All the examinations and procedures that have been carried out show that everything is fine."

According to Sport, even if Ronaldinho is able to play against Osasuna, Rijkaard may wait until the following weekend as he does not want the player to be criticised by fans in Camp Nou.
