Benitez said: “We were looking for a player with pace and power.
Niggling
“We had a list of 10 strikers which we then brought down to two or three priorities.
“The first option was Torres because he was young.
“But Owen was one of those on the list we had, he was one of the names.
“There were a lot of things to consider — the age and other conditions.
“The senior players here talked really well about Michael but in the end Torres was our decision. I am really happy with Torres although I know that Michael is also a very good finisher.”
Torres, 23, goes chasing a hat-trick of Anfield hat-tricks this afternoon.
Owen, 28, has been plagued by niggling injuries again this season and has only scored two Premier League goals since October 7.
But Benitez is convinced Owen is far from a spent force. He said: “When Michael is fit, he is one of the best finishers in the world.
“But Torres has more pace and can play behind the defenders.
“Michael just needs time but also when the team is playing well he will have more chances. The injuries have not helped either.
“Hopefully after this game he will start scoring a lot of goals again.”
