Foster targets No1 spot at United Stuart James
Thursday February 28, 2008
guardian.co.uk Ben Foster is not the only English goalkeeper keen to see the back of this season but the 24-year-old can at least cite mitigating circumstances for failing to enhance his reputation. Having required knee surgery in the summer, Foster has endured a frustrating eight months on the sidelines but it is a measure of his strength of mind, as well as his ambition, that he talked yesterday about starting next season as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper.
"My aim isn't to play at all this season, just to get back to full fitness," said Foster. "But next season is going to be a fresh start and I want to be that No1 goalkeeper." It is a bold statement for someone who has yet to make a first-team appearance for Manchester United although two seasons on loan at Watford, during which Aidy Boothroyd predicated Foster would one day be recognised as the best goalkeeper in the world, have fuelled confidence.
Reports that Fabio Capello has taken time out to watch footage of Foster's England debut against Spain last February appear to have had a similar effect. "Yesterday morning was the first time I've read what he said about me," said Foster, who is expected to make his comeback from injury against Middlesbrough reserves a week today. "It's nice to know that I'm still in [the England manager's] plans and that he's taken notice of me."
Foster is too polite to admit he has lost little ground in the race to be England No1, after Paul Robinson and Scott Carson made high-profile mistakes, but he did recall sympathising with the latter after watching his faux-pas against Croatia. "I felt for him so bad," said Foster, who drew parallels with the goal Robinson scored against him for Spurs last season. "All eyes seem to be on you and you just want the ground to swallow you up and take you out of the situation."
Not that Foster is fearful of returning to the spotlight as he outlined his hopes for the new campaign. "My first and foremost thought is to get into the United team and that's not going to be easy," said Foster, who was speaking at a launch by SELLS Goalkeeper Products. "Edwin [van der Sar] has been in great form this season but if I can get in there, then you start looking further afield to the England fold. If I can get into that as well, then brilliant."
