galleria zoom The phrases ‘do or die’ and ‘now or never’ could not be more appropriately applied to Valencia’s dire situation as they prepare for a make or break battle in the semi final second leg of the Copa del Rey. Standing between them and a last shot at redemption will be the treble-chasing Barcelona side who themselves are starting to feel the heat after a mediocre run of form in recent weeks.
Last Chance For Los Che
Winning the Copa appears to be Valencia’s last chance of salvaging their horror season and very possibly their only way of making the UEFA Cup next term, with the club stumbling down to 10th place in the league after yet another Liga defeat at the weekend.
They are now nine points adrift of Espanyol in sixth, but in truth, qualifying for Europe should be the last thing on coach Ronald Koeman’s mind at the moment. As things stand right now, Los Che are actually closer to relegation than they are to the European-qualifying places. They are lurking just four points above the drop zone and the realization of just how bad the season has become is suddenly hitting home.
But while they are struggling in the league, notching up just two La Liga wins in 2008 so far, the Copa del Rey has been their refuge and they seem to play like a different team altogether in this competition.
They swept aside Real Betis 4-2 on aggregate in the round of 16, snuck past Atlético Madrid in the quarter finals on away goals after a 3-3 overall score and they turned in one of their more defensively solid performances of the season in the first leg of the semi finals three weeks ago, drawing 1-1 at the Nou Camp and coming within a whisker of snatching a stunning win.
Even if they do get past Barça in the semis, there’s still no guarantee they will go on and win it, with an in-form Getafe looking very likely to be the opponents-in-waiting in the final. But for the next 90 minutes at the Mestalla, the Valencia eleven that will take to the field will have to fight for their lives as if it were a final.
Barça’s Bad Timing
Things aren’t any better lately for the Catalan giants themselves, winning just once in their last five games in all competitions. They may very well still be in the hunt for a glorious treble, but there’s also the very distinct possibility that they could end up empty handed for the second season in a row.
With influential figures Leo Messi and Deco out injured, and Ronaldinho supposedly lacking fitness, their absences - coupled with the team’s dip in form - could not have come at a worse time as the season enters the critical phase.
It doesn’t help either that coach Frank Rijkaard is unable to get on with his job without constant interference from all quarters, especially when it concerns his team and tactical selections and his leadership and managerial qualities.
If the Dutchman has been under increasing pressure for the past 12 months – since last season’s La Liga title capitulation – then the pressure that will be on him over the next two months will be bursting beyond boiling point.
His aptitude in match strategy and tactics will be put to the test again in the second leg after the events in the home leg three weeks ago. Despite thoroughly dominating the contest and creating countless scoring chances, the Blaugrana fell behind to a 70th minute Valencia counterattack and had to desperately wrangle away to earn an injury time equalizer.
Having handed the away goal advantage to Valencia, Barcelona will once again have to come out and attack but in doing so, they run the high risk of repeating the same mistakes from the first leg.
Just like Koeman’s troops, Rijkaard and his charges will have to play the 90 minutes at the Mestalla as if their lives depended on it. Their careers in blue-and-maroon colours will definitely be on the line, and even if they do squeeze into the final and win the Copa for the first time in ten years, chances are it still won’t be enough to appease the fans, critics and the hierarchy if they go on and lose the other two titles at stake.

TEAM NEWS
Valencia
The bad news for Koeman is that winger Vicente will be ruled out due to a toe ailment. He is joined by defender Alexis, who although has recovered from a four-month long injury, is still some ways off full fitness.
Éver Banega, however, has shrugged off a muscle strain that kept him out of the squad in last weekend’s defeat to Sevilla and the Argentine should return straight to the midfield set-up. Defenders Marco Caneira and Iván Helguera have also been included in Koeman’s 18-man squad list, despite suffering injury scares in training earlier in the week.
Nikola Žigić and Stephen Sunny have been excluded for technical reasons.
Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Hildebrand – Miguel, Albiol, Marchena, Moretti – Baraja ©, Banega – Joaquín, Silva, Mata – Villa
FC Barcelona
All eyes were on whether Ronaldinho would be fit enough to be included in Rijkaard’s squad. The answer, it seems, is no: he took part in Wednesday training, but has not been named in coach Rijkaard's squad of 16.
Touré Yayá is back in action, but Oleguer is out: he will join Deco, Messi, Giovani Dos Santos and Santi Ezquerro in the dry docks. Rafael Márquez, too, has been given a few more days to recover.
Gianluca Zambrotta, meanwhile, will return to the squad after serving out his one match ban in the weekend draw at Almería.
Probable Starting XI (4-3-3): Valdés – Zambrotta, Puyol ©, Milito, Abidal – Xavi, Yaya, Iniesta – Bojan, Eto’o, Henry
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Valencia – Timo Hildebrand
The German keeper was the hero for Valencia in the first leg, pulling off countless crucial saves to keep his side in the contest. It will a case of more of the same for Timo and if he can help keep a clean sheet to force a goalless draw, it will be enough to send Los Ché into the finals.
FC Barcelona – Andrés Iniesta
Despite all the hype surrounding the ‘Fantastic Four’, it is the team’s unsung hero Iniesta who has been winning the plaudits for his consistent displays this season. Rijkaard will no doubt be turning to the 23 year old again to pull the strings from midfield and score a few goals if need be.
PREDICTION
Playing the second leg at home is usually a huge advantage, especially after attaining a favourable result in the away tie, but unfortunately for Valencia, they have the worse home record this season. It should still be a closely fought contest but if Barça play their cards right, they should be able to nip in to the final.
