Totti 'out for six months'
Saturday 19 April, 2008
Roma captain Francesco Totti could be out for six months after tests showed torn ligaments in his right knee.
Although the official announcement will only be made tomorrow, Giallorossi Coach Luciano Spalletti is certain the worst has happened.
“With all likelihood it is a sprained right knee with damage to the anterior cruciate ligament,” explained the tactician.
Totti was stretchered off 39 minutes into today’s 1-1 draw with Livorno and rushed straight to the Villa Stuart clinic for tests.
The initial reports coming out of the hospital suggest the diagnosis has been confirmed and Totti will require surgery.
His season is over and he could well be sidelined for up to six months with this serious knee injury.
“I think Francesco is not in good shape and I am rather worried,” admitted patron Rosella Sensi.
“It’s a great shame and adds to a very sad day. In any case, we will not give in on the Scudetto. I wish to thank the players and the Coach.”

Spalletti "devastated" at setback Saturday 19 April, 2008
Luciano Spalletti believes Roma lack the right attitude to win the Scudetto and was “devastated” at the outcome of today’s game.
“Our disappointment and devastation is total, because the team was well aware it was challenging for something important,” said the Coach.
The 1-1 draw with Livorno, sealed by Alessandro Diamanti’s late free kick, means on Sunday Inter could theoretically extend their lead to six points with just four games to go.
“We are lacking certain qualities that at times we are able to find and put into a match situation, but in others we can’t.
“Today we played well, even if we didn’t create a huge amount, especially in the first half. After the equaliser the lead we had three or four chances, but as often happens we only put the right aggression into it after we run into problems.”
It can be said that Livorno decided this Scudetto, as both their games with Roma ended 1-1 this season.
“It all depends on Inter. We have thrown away a golden opportunity, but what can you say to the lads after a draw like this, when you concede a strike from 25 metres in their first shot on goal?
“We should have had a bit more luck, but this season it all went against us.”
To make matters worse, Francesco Totti went off in the first half and has been diagnosed with damaged anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee.
Mexes rues missed chances Saturday 19 April, 2008
Philippe Mexes admits Roma’s Scudetto ambitions have collapsed because of their inability to beat “the little teams.”
A win today would have closed the gap on the leaders, but the 1-1 draw with Livorno has instead given Inter the opportunity to go six points clear.
“It went this way. We are very disappointed because we deserved more,” said a heartbroken Mexes.
“Unfortunately it ended badly. A 1-0 result is never enough, against any opponent. It is such a great shame.”
Mirko Vucinic had given Roma the lead, but in the final minutes Alessandro Diamanti curled in a free kick for the Amaranto.
“You win the Scudetto with the little teams. If you always draw with these sides, then you cannot think of the title.
“Unfortunately, now we have to wait on other results.”
Daniele De Rossi took it worse than anyone and was in tears at the final whistle.
Roma had also been held to a 1-1 draw away to Livorno earlier this season and also suffered a 3-0 defeat at Siena.
