Fabio Cannavaro is coming to terms with missing Euro 2008 after picking up an injury yesterday and Roberto Donadoni is planning his reshuffle.
Italy’s talismanic captain was stretchered off during yesterday’s first training session in Austria in agony after damaging ligaments in his left ankle.
The injury occurred after a tackle with Juventus stopper Giorgio Chiellini and has left Canna devastated.
“I have spoken to him and he is in a dark mood,” agent Enrico Fedele admitted.
“He is also scared because he has never had to have surgery and he may have to now.
“We are waiting to see whether there is a broken bone and what the extent of the damage is.
“We will also have to see whether there is ligament damage but we aren’t talking about the European Championship.”
From his bed in Vienna’s AKH Hospital, Cannavaro tried to put a brave face on things.
“I am even optimistic in moments like this,” the former Juventus man was quoted as saying.
Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini is ready to fly in to replace Cannavaro in the squad, but Donadoni is left with a selection headache.
With Inter star Marco Materazzi not at 100 per cent, there is a chance that Roma veteran Christian Panucci may be moved into the centre.
Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon is the favourite to pull on the captain’s armband, but Alessandro Del Piero is also a strong candidate.
