Italy desperately need a victory against Romania on Friday and Mike Anderson is calling for Antonio Cassano to save the day



After watching the debacle that was the Azzurri’s performance against Holland one thing became clear – the main reason Italy lost is because they rarely threatened Edwin Van Der Sar. There is no doubt that the defence was a shambles, but if the forwards had finished the few chances they had then the game could have at least ended in a draw.

The brightest points of the encounter were the introductions of both Alessandro Del Piero and the mercurial Antonio Cassano, who added something extra to the attack. Within minutes of coming on, Talentino chipped a beautiful ball over the Dutch defence to Luca Toni who – as seems to be a habit for the striker in major tournaments – dispatched the ball well over the bar.

It is true that Antonio is, to say the least, a combustible character, but this is not a sound reason for leaving a player of such talent on the bench. Roberto Donadoni took the decision to include Cassano in the squad and now cannot be afraid to use him, especially when the team is crying out for some creativity. The decision to take Cassano to the tournament will be questioned much more critically should he barely play a part rather than if he plays him and the Sampdoria man merely fails to perform.

Every side at Euro 2008 who have ambitions of winning the tournament have a fantasista, a game-breaker, and Cassano is the personification of this. In the Holland game the players were looking at each other waiting for someone to make something happen and this is what Cassano will provide. He can share the burden of creativity that currently rests solely on the shoulders of Andrea Pirlo and give the Azzurri another player that opposing teams cannot predict.

In truth, Italy are in desperate need of a lift after such a bad performance and have to win their next game against a resilient Romania side. If one thing can be taken from the French performance in their opener then it is that the Azzurri will have to do something special to score against a team that will commit everyone to defence.

It is the perfect game to start Cassano as there will not be too much threat from the Romanian attack and there will be plenty of opportunities for the boy from Bari to distinguish himself. It is time for Antonio to realise the potential that he unquestionably holds.

There are reports in Italy that Roberto Donadoni is ready to ring the changes for Friday’s must-win Group C match against Romania.

The world champions are already under pressure after losing their opener 3-0 to Holland and know that nothing less than a win will do in their second game.

The Press have been quick to criticise Donadoni for his decision to leave out Roma star Daniele De Rossi and field Marco Materazzi in the place of Giorgio Chiellini against Holland.

And now it has been reported that the former Livorno man is set to insert Chiellini for Materazzi, who is suffering with a calf injury, and De Rossi in Gennaro Gattuso’s position.

Lyon stopper Fabio Grosso also made a good case for a start after coming on as a substitute in Berne and could have earned Don’s trust.

It has also been suggested that Alessandro Del Piero and Antonio Cassano could start with one alongside Luca Toni and the other as a trequartista in a 4-3-1-2 formation.

Yesterday the Azzurri squad went into the city of Vienna with their families, except for Cassano, who chose to sleep instead.
