Eto'o Wanted Madrid Move - Report
Spanish sports daily As claims that Samuel Eto'o previously had the chance to discuss a move to Real Madrid, and he was more than open to the idea...
Pro-Real Madrid columnist Tomás Roncero is renowned for his gossip column in As, and although his reports must often be taken with a pinch of salt he stands by this latest revelation.
Apparently Eto'o offered his services to Real Madrid president Ramón Calderon during an amicable, light-hearted meeting in Vienna ahead of the Euro 2008 match between Spain and Germany.
Roncero proclaims the following:
"The meeting was amicable and in a completely relaxed tone. But between the jokes, there was a time in which Eto'o became more serious and spoke to the president of Real Madrid in these terms: "Take me to Madrid! Please, president, do what you can. What happened in the past is already forgotten and I have many friends there. If you bring me to Madrid, I'll be very happy.""
Calderón apparently then shared this anecdote with several of his executives that evening but gave it little more though as his sole target was Cristiano Ronaldo. Nonetheless the topic has been raised now and again over the past few weeks at the Bernabéu.
Nonetheless there have been vetos due to the fact that many Madrid fans haven't forgiven Eto'o for his conduct when Barcelona won the 2005 Liga title, which was apparently 'disrespectful', and a move for Eto'o would break the entente between Ramon and his opposite number Joan Laporta at Barcelona.
In spite of the above, though, the latest words from Calderón indicate that Samuel is not on the agenda. Instead the quest for Cristiano Ronaldo continues.
