Ancelotti explains Milan cure Sunday 21 September, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carlo Ancelotti explains how he revolutionised Milan in the space of a week. “We co-operated and moved as a unit.”
The Rossoneri were yet to get off the mark after two straight defeats, but the 4-1 win over Lazio tonight seems to have ended the crisis.
“The difference was we tried to play with more depth and movement, spreading the play, and I think we did it well. There was less close passing and more pace.
“We have been playing this way for many years and when Marco Borriello or Pippo Inzaghi are fit, they provide the ideal centre-forward characteristics. Unfortunately they've not been fit recently so we had to find alternatives.
“Milan are an attacking side and will always take risks at the back. Our only real error tonight against a quality team was leaving ourselves exposed on what was our own corner kick.”
This result follows on from Thursday's 3-1 UEFA Cup victory over Zurich, so Ancelotti's job is once again safe.
“I don't know if the negative period is over and I say it isn't because we cannot be complacent. Everyone took on their own share of the responsibility without seeking a scapegoat.
“What Kaka said was probably right, as we all perhaps put too much faith in the great talent of this team and forgot that to play football you need organisation and hard work.
“Everyone was very aggressive and co-operated to ensure the squad worked at its best. There were definite improvements in defence because everyone else helped to win back the ball.
“It was a general attitude. Today the team was running and last week against Genoa they looked static. So it wasn't just a fitness issue, one has to run in an organised fashion, or you end up wasting energy.”
This victory was achieved without Andrea Pirlo - who is out for two months with a thigh strain - while Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko were on the bench.
“Pirlo is irreplaceable, so you have to play in a different way. In fact we put Gennaro Gattuso in his position and he has very different characteristics, but he did it brilliantly and was very precise, more so than when he plays out wide on the right.”

Player Ratings: Milan 4-1 Lazio
Milan thrashed Lazio 4-1 at San Siro this evening. Anthony Sormani rates the players on show...
»Comments Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom MILAN
Abbiati: 6.5: Could do nothing on Zarate's goal, and was sharp for most of the evening, making one fine stop from Pandev.
Zambrotta: 7.5: Perhaps guilty of trying to push up on Zarate's goal, but more than made up for it with his stunning long range wonder-goal.
Kaladze: 5.5: At fault for Zarate goal, and had a few lapses of concentration. Maldini saved his skin on a number of occasions.
Maldini: 7: Fine game from the 40-year-old, who belied his years tonight. Was outstanding in the second half when he man-marked Zarate.
Jankulovski: 6.5: Steady at left back, delivering some good crosses, including the one for Pato's goal.
Gattuso: 6.5: Was really fired up for tonight's game, and his determination and heart helped push Milan to victory.
Seedorf: 7: Fantastic finish for the first goal, Seedorf was back to his near creative self tonight, directing the play from midfield.
Ambrosini: 7: Won the midfield battle over his old Milan colleague Brocchi, and his spirit never let up from the first minute until the last.
Kaka: 9: Absolutely inspirational. Went on a hole host of solo slalom runs, brought out a brilliant save from Carrizo, and of course scored Milan's stunning fourth. Brilliant!
Pato: 7.5: Offered Milan so many options up-front, with his ability to take on defenders, drop deep and destabilise the backline. Took his goal well.
Borriello: 7: Did well tonight. Held the ball up, formed a good understanding with Pato, and on another night could have grabbed himself a brace.

LAZIO
Carrizo: 7.5: A few slight question marks on Zambrotta goal but, despite letting in four, Carrizo pulled off a string of stunning stops to prevent a bigger scoreline. Two fantastic stops from Kaka and Borriello.
Lichtsteiner: 5: Has had a good start to his Lazio career, but tonight he was poor. His loose clearance was the prelude to Milan's first goal from Seedorf.
Siviglia: 5: The 35-year-old veteran showed his age tonight, and was always struggling against Pato and Borriello.
Rozenhal: 5: The Czech Republic defender was fast asleep on Pato's goal, and his positioning was suspect on more than one occasion.
Kolarov: 6: The best of a bad bunch in the Lazio backline. Largely did what was required of him. A few long-range free kicks too.
Brocchi: 5.5: Admitted earlier in the week that he has fond memories of Milan, and perhaps this showed tonight as he failed to get nasty in the dirty-work battle with Ambrosini and Gattuso.
Matuzalem: 6: Showed some nice touches, but the Brazilian never really imposed himself on the game, and allowed the Milan midfield trio to take charge as time wore-on.
Ledesma: 6.5: The Lazio midfielder who showed the most character tonight with some intelligent passes. Unlucky with the ricochet for Seedorf's goal.
Mauri: 6: Had some good moments, including two penalty shouts, but he somewhat lost his way as the game grew older and he was eventually substituted.
Pandev: 7.5: Excellent up-front for Lazio. Forever dangerous, creating Zarate's goal with a fine through pass, and perhaps should have scored himself on a couple of occasions.
Zarate: 7.5: Confirmed tonight that he is a phenomenal talent. Explosive player, with equally good feet, his pace and trickery caused all kinds of problems in the first half, and he finished his goal clinically. Maldini had him under shackles in the second period, but he still created a one-on-one for Pandev.

Kaka: We are a team again! Sunday 21 September, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaka believes Milan have turned a corner simply by realising “we are not a bunch of individuals, but a united team.”
The Rossoneri were propping up the table after two straight defeats against Bologna and Genoa, but got back on track by thrashing Lazio 4-1 tonight.
“We discussed this week that we are not a bunch of individuals, but rather a united team and that is what we proved tonight,” said the Brazilian.
“There is a long way to go yet, but you can already see the improvements and this will be a good example for the future.”
It is Milan's second win in four days, as they also beat Zurich 3-1 at San Siro in the UEFA Cup on Thursday evening.
Kaka scored one of their four goals against Lazio along with Clarence Seedorf, Gianluca Zambrotta and Alexandre Pato, while substitute Ronaldinho hit the bar in stoppages.
“It's wonderful to play with my countrymen Pato and Ronaldinho, but even more so playing in a squad with such champions as Maldini, Ambrosini, Seedorf, etc.”
