Blues boss Phil bawls out starsFURIOUS Phil Scolari called a halt to training at Chelsea on Friday to deliver an astonishing rocket to his disobedient stars.
The Blues’ Brazilian boss blasted his team for failing to keep the ball in Tuesday’s 4-0 Champions League stroll over Bordeaux.
And he tore into them again for making the same mistakes in their penultimate workout before Sunday’s showdown with title rivals Manchester United.
Seething Scolari said:
“When I trained with the players, I said to them ‘What were our mistakes against Bordeaux?’ Then in training, we made the same mistake after 10 minutes, so I stopped training and told them ‘I want this, this and this.’ “
Against United, why is 10-0 better than winning 1-0?
We need to keep the ball and stay in position.” Heaven knows what Chelsea’s millionaire superstars, such as John Terry, Frank Lampard, Deco and Didier Drogba, thought of their manager’s outburst at the club’s Cobham training HQ.
But it shows old ‘Gene Hackman’ is not prepared to sit back and admire his handywork.
Unbeaten Chelsea sit proudly with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League this morning, six points ahead of United who pipped them to the Double last season. But Scolari is demanding even more from his side.
He said:
“What can we do better? More control of the ball. More touches on the ball. More time with the ball. “I’ve seen the analysis of the Bordeaux game from my staff and what I said afterwards was a reality.
After I put Belletti on, we controlled the game better.
“I want more possession of the ball, more control of the ball, more tranquillity.” Stamford Bridge is hardly likely to be a tranquil place on Sunday.
Despite Scolari’s claims to the contrary, Chelsea will be desperate to avenge defeats to United in last season’s Premier League title race and Champions League final.
But the Blues chief, who took over from Avram Grant in the summer, said: “When I came to England the challenge was to win the Premier League, not just the games against United.
“The challenge for Chelsea is to win all the competitions in which we participate. This is one more game. Nothing different.
“Three points against United are the same as three points against Stoke City, Wigan or Portsmouth. The same.
“I’ve not mentioned anything about revenge this week.”
United have started poorly with just one victory in six games. But Scolari is refusing to write off the Red Devils — even if they lose in West London on Sunday. He said: “If we win, we follow with Liverpool in first position. We are together at the moment.
“It’s better for us to be nine points ahead of United, but it’s only the start of the league.
“There is a long way to go. If it was the last three or four games, nine points would be fantastic.
“But we have 33 games more so nine points is nothing.”
Scolari may be upset with his players but his opposite number Alex Ferguson is assured of a warm welcome at the Bridge.
The Brazilian said:
“After the game, we’ll have some wine. I know he doesn’t drink Portuguese wine because he used not to have it with Mourinho.
“I don’t have any Brazilian wine with me, so maybe I need to have some French wine or South African. After this, Sir Alex will be happy.” This post has been edited by ლევaნი on 21 Sep 2008, 02:15
