At the beginning of the 1980's, there was a scandal similar to the Moggipoli: the Totonero, involving illegal bets.
Among the players involved, were Paolo Rossi, who would be top scorer in the 1982 WC in Spain, and Milan's GK Enrico Albertosi.
In total, seven teams were involved: Lazio, Bologna, Avellino, Milan, Napoli, Perugia and Vicenza.
As a consequence, two of these serie A teams were sent to serie B: Lazio and Milan.
During the investigations, on March 23, 1980, after the sunday's games, the police went inside 6 stadiums to arrest some players, and club executives... among those arrested, was Milan's president Felice Colombo. Everybody was released after paying heavy bail bonds... but the legal relief didn't stop the sport sanction.
Albertosi and Colombo were suspended from football for life.
Milan stayed in Serie B only for the 1980-81 season, because it dominated the league with 50 points out of 76 possible (18 wins, 14 draws, 6 losses...consider 2 points only per victory)...Milan also had the top scorer, Antonelli, with 15 goals....
So the following season (1981-82), Milan was back in serie A. But things were not pretty, Milan watched Juventus win their second scudetto in a row under Trapattoni, and finished in 14th place with 24 points only...
Along with Como and Bologna, Milan went back to serie B again...
>>>>NOTE: During this period, despite being in serie B, Franco Baresi was a top CB, and many serie A teams offered good money to Milan for him, but he declined all offers to stay with Milan... he made the 1982 Italian team that won the WC in Spain. <<<<
So in the 1982-83, in serie B, Milan had no problems to win the title, with 54 points... 4 more than the previous time in serie B... 77 goals in 38 games...
But back in serie A, in the 1983-84 season, 32 points were just good for the 16th place. Again, Milan had to watch Juventus celebrate another scudetto, with Michele Platini and company...
and in the 1984-85 season, it was turn for Verona to win the scudetto, with Milan finishing 7 points behind...
so after these mediocre years, and financial problems during the 1985-86 season, a 50 year old investor, from Milano, acquired the team and transformed it into one of the greatest in the world:
Silvio Berlusconi
