Poll Results: Even Split On Messi And Ronaldo! The readers have spoken, and there is no daylight between their choices. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are equally highly-rated...
Yesterday, in light of Samuel Eto'o's remarks, we asked which player was better between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Eto'o was in no doubt when he backed Barcelona teammate Messi, but Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo has plenty of fans of his own.
These were out in force as the polls opened yesterday morning, and as such the result was an even split.
50% voted for Cristiano Ronaldo, including Jefferson from Lagos in Nigeria:
"People who say Messi is better than Ronaldo are being stereotypical. Ability to take on defenders is not the only criterion in judging players. Factors like aerial prowess, shooting ability, ball control, passing, speed etc. also count. If you put Ronaldo's head on with Messi using these criteria, you will see he is a better player than Messi. Ronaldo is more useful to a coach than Messi. I will say that anytime. For a midfielder to score 42 goals is incredible."
Meanwhile 50% voted for Messi, such as Yazzan from Irvine, USA:
"Messi is the better player. It was clear when Man U played Barcelona in the Champions League tournament that Ronaldo could barely impact the game while Messi dominated the whole right side of the field and gave two passes that Eto'o should have buried in the goal."
And then there were some that thought the entire argument was redundant, such as Mes Que Un Club from Catalonia:
"Why is it that for Ronaldinho, who almost single handedly won La Liga and CL in 2005-06 but flopped at WC 06, they gift wrapped both the Golden Ball and best player of the year award, for Cannavaro who only had a handful of great games in an ultra defensive Italy team and was an average player in Jueventus and had an awful start at Madrid! The reason being was that the WC is the greatest soccer stage, and to be best there means you are the 'best'? And now, when Ronaldo, this summer, once again failed and screwed up in big games, namely Euro 08, he is still considered the hot favorite? Forget about Messi, (although I believe he is a better player), but aren't the likes of Xavi, who was one of few good Barca players last season, had a tremendous Euro and has carried his stunning form onto this season's La Liga, a better candidate than Ronaldo?"
