Real Madrid's institutional work has been very intense throughout 2008. The Club, by initiative of the Board presided by Ramón Calderón, launched the Just Causes Programme at the start of the year. The International Real Madrid Awards were created just over a month ago and the President travelled to Colombia and Israel, amongst other places, to sign important agreements for the creation of new Real Madrid Social Integration Academies.
2008 began with the Just Causes Programme, consisting on five monthly projects developed between January and May. Juanuary's cause was the 'Social Integration of Immigrants.' It was followed by February's 'Promotion of Reading Amongst Children' and March's 'Respect And Affection For Our Elders'. The causes for April and May were 'Real Madrid: We recycle To Protect The Environment' and 'Real Madrid For An Athletic Life Against Drugs,' respectively. All these campaigns were a great success and were supported by many important public and private institutions.
International Awards
Ramón Calderón presented the International Awards at the end of October. They are part of the 2008/09 Institutional Development Programme and they represent the Club's support for the different aspects that help improve the practice of sport. Other activities organised as part as the aforementioned programme were: meetings with journalists, the presentation of Realmadrid Radio, the Real Madrid Travelling Exhibition, and the Santiago Bernabéu Year.
More events that took place this year were the International Tribute to Alfredo di Stéfano -attended by prominent leaders in the world of football-, the laying of the stepping stone for the new Academy Residence and the creation of the European Friends of Real Madrid Association.
Israel and Palestine, together for peace
Ramón Calderón was very busy during his trip to Israel. He participated in the tenth anniversary of the Simon Peres Center for Peace, which has developed educational programmes for close to 55,000 Israeli and Palestinian children. The Real Madrid Premier signed an agreement for the development of a project entitled 'United Football Academies for Peace,' whose goal is to contribute to establish peace by bringing Israeli and Palestinian children, families and communities together with a programme combining the practice of sport with education.
Real Madrid's charitable side also came to the fore during the President's trip to Colombia. Calderón signed an agreement with President Álvaro Uribe to create an Integration Academy in Bogotá, which already has 100 students that are being taught by legendary coahces and former Colombia internationals Pinol and Osmán López. It must be noted that Real Madrid also travelled to Saudi Arabia and Morocco this year.
