Mourinho: Scudetto in our grasp
Sunday 15 February, 2009
Jose Mourinho believes Inter fully deserved their derby victory and admits the Scudetto “is in our hands now.”
The 2-1 result over Milan sent them nine points clear of Juventus and 11 ahead of Milan.
“There are 33 points still up for grabs, there is a long way to go yet. I cannot say, nor think, the Scudetto is over. I can say that if we don't win it, then it will be because we've given it away. It's in our hands now.
“Tonight was very important, as it gives us the chance to leave Milan and Juve in a psychologically difficult position.”
There was controversy, as Adriano scored the opener with his arm, but Mourinho insisted he would not have complained if Milan had netted in similar circumstances.
“I would've said it was a goal. His movement was to head the ball and that was his intention, so it is involuntary. There are some situations that are difficult to judge,” assured the Coach.
“On the other hand, there are easy decisions, like [Massimo] Ambrosini, who should've had a second booking and a red.
“We saw two great teams play tonight. We talked it over at half-time, that we would have chances to score if we kept it aggressive, but if Milan netted then it would be tight to the very end.”
Mourinho went very defensive in the final stages, playing six defenders at one point.
“Carlo [Ancelotti] ran risks and I tried to close it down. [Pippo] Inzaghi looks like he's 25, not 35, and Ronaldinho was very dynamic. But we had to defend and these are three very important points for us.
“I don't think Milan deserved the draw, as we were strong for a long time. I know Milan reacted well at the end, but we had the chances to seal it and [Christian] Abbiati made a great save on [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic.
“Afterwards Julio Cesar performed very well and Milan proved they are a team full of quality even without Kaka. For me, this is a great victory and fully deserved. We were under pressure for the final 15 minutes, but I like winning like that, right to the end against a talented opponent. That proves character.
“The Rossoneri emerge from this game sad, but with their heads held high for the UEFA Cup tie with Werder Bremen. I hope an Italian side wins that trophy.”
This result means Mourinho has gone for 110 League home games unbeaten in his career.
“Adriano and Ibra have the power and the quality to hold the ball and wait for the players to push up behind them.”
The Special One revealed there was a unique dedication from l'Imperatore in the derby.
“Adriano's goal was the greatest of my career, as it is the first time that the player has dedicated a goal to a Coach's son! My son always goes to school with his Adriano shirt, so he's very proud. He always plays him at the Playstation, too!”
Inter can be relaxed as they go into the Champions League fixture with Manchester United.
“These are special games and I think tonight the team showed intelligence and a good work ethic against a great squad. Manchester have immense quality, a bit like Milan with their pace and creativity. Against players like this it is very difficult.
“I am not someone who thinks you need to win the home leg by a comfortable margin to qualify, but I do say we must not go to Manchester trailing.”
Mourinho told the News of the World this weekend that he would like to return to Chelsea one day.
“I was happy with them and them with me, so why not return one day? I am a professional and want to work in the best Leagues in the world, whether Italy, England or Spain.
“I have another 15 years or so left in my career and 'one day' is a long time away. I say the same about becoming the Coach of the Portugal side.”

Inter Fans Hail Paolo Maldini Before Milan Derby
The legendary Rossoneri’s captain proved that he is one of those few players who is respected by all fans, irrespective of which team they support.

The Rossoneri's captain was in fact welcomed to San Siro by a very respectful banner displayed by the Nerazzurri supporters. The message on the banner said 'Per 20 anni nostro rivale, ma nella vita sempre leale' (For 20 years our opponent, but in life always loyal).
Maldini showed that he appreciated this message by applauding the Inter fans who responded by applauding back to the Italian legend.
This will be his final Derby della Madonnina, after playing in total 55 games against Inter, before he retires at the end of the season, and this episode proved yet again how respected Maldini is all over Italy by all fans of all teams.

Ancelotti: Title ambitions are over
Sunday 15 February, 2009
Carlo Ancelotti believes the referee penalised Milan, but is ready to concede the Scudetto is no longer an objective.
“We should've had two penalties, not just one. As for Adriano's goal, I'd say his header was certainly not going into the net,” he said of the Brazilian's opener, which bounced in off an arm.
“The hand was decisive for the goal. Whether it's voluntary, I cannot say, but the ball was clearly not going on target.
“I would call that a fairly clear incident. The player is totally clear to jump and under no pressure. It's easy to judge.”
The 2-1 derby defeat leaves Milan 11 points adrift of the leaders and Ancelotti admits the title race is over as far as they are concerned.
“We can't think about that right now, as we are 11 points behind. Our objective is to finish in the top three and we are playing well, but we have to be careful, as this will be a long season right to the end.”
“11 points is a great deal, so we have to focus on the other objective, which is qualifying directly for the Champions League and then of course the UEFA Cup. I think the team is in good shape right now and we have to keep going.”
Alexandre Pato scored late on to set up a very tense finale, but the Rossoneri were unable to equalise.
“He has to keep playing like this and is destined to become one of the best strikers in the world.
“It was a game we started fairly well and suffered under Inter's strength and long ball, but we knew that would happen. We ran the risk of going 3-0 down, but the latter stages were all Milan and we deserved a draw.
Ronaldinho was particularly inspired in Kaka's absence, ending a run of poor performances and spells on the bench.
“He is back to his usual levels, the way he was playing in the first half of the season, and was always in the thick of the action.”
“[Clarence] Seedorf was perhaps the most consistent on the field. We played well and only really had problems in terms of physique with Ibrahimovic and Adriano.”
Some have said this will be Ancelotti's final derby, as the failure to win the title and interest from Chelsea could see him quit San Siro at the end of the season.
“I already answered this. It was not my last derby and nothing has changed since yesterday.”
