Hoeneß confirms interest in Gomez
Uli Hoeneß has for the first time publicly confirmed Bayern’s interest in VfB Stuttgart nd Germany striker Mario Gomez. “He’s a very interesting player. We’ll see what we can do to sign him,” the Bayern general manager declared on DSF sport TV’s Sunday morning magazine show Doppelpass. Hoeneß said the club would open talks with the 23-year-old this week, “and we’ll see what comes of it. I’m relatively optimistic,” the 57-year-old stated.
Germany’s most successful club first attempted to sign Gomez last summer, but Stuttgart were unwilling to release their leading striker at the time. “And we’ll be trying to hold onto him again,” VfB general manager Horst Heldt said.
Gomez himself provided ample evidence of his quality with a superbly-taken goal in his side’s 2-1 away defeat in Munich, his 24th league strike of the campaign. “I’d definitely buy Mario Gomez. A player like that would suit Bayern well,” FCB supervisory board chairman Franz Beckenbauer said on Premiere TV.
“Mario would be a good addition to the squad,” said Bastian Schweinsteiger, “I know him very well privately from time we’ve spent together with Germany. On character alone he’d fit in well here – and as a player too, obviously. There aren’t that many footballers with his quality.”
After helping Stuttgart to third in the table and a Champions League qualifier, Gomez himself remained tight-lipped. “I’ll talk to the club and my family, and then we’ll decide,” he said after the final whistle on Saturday. The striker was wearing Franck Ribéry’s shirt at the time after swapping with the France star.
With the Bavarians safely qualified for the Champions League group phase, Hoeneß and FCB chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed immediate work with new coach Louis van Gaal on assembling next season’s squad. “There’ll certainly be some activity,” the Bayern general manager promised.
