New Liverpool star Aquilani denies having fascist sympathies
NEW £20million Liverpool signing Alberto Aquilani has denied having fascist sympathies – despite having a statue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in his home.Sunday Mirror Sport revealed last week that Kop boss Rafa Benitez had agreed a deal with Roma for the 25-year-old midfielder to replace Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso.
But Aquilani finds himself faced with an image problem even before he has kicked a ball in a city that has historically always had fierce left-wing political values.
Aquilani and Roma captain Daniele Di Rossi have both been accused of being members of Italy’s far-right party Forza Nuova. Aquilani insists, though, that he is not a political animal.
Yet he has admitted to harbouring an admiration for Mussolini, the dictator who became an ally of Adolf Hitler during the Second World War.
And his views on Italy’s immigration policy could have been penned by Il Duce himself.
In an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport last year, Aquilani said: “There are too many foreigners in the country – most of the violence and trouble you see is caused by them.
“My uncle is very keen on Mussolini and he gave me some things to do with him.
“I have a statue and a few photographs and portraits of Mussolini at home.
“But as for me, I don’t know anything about politics.”
It’s a view-point that will not endear him to the people of Liverpool. But support for the policies of Mussolini remains strong in Rome – even though Roma are considered to be the left-wing club of the Eternal City.
