Misfiring Chelsea get the Terry hairdryerJohn Terry has issued a stern warning to his Chelsea team-mates as they face up to their first real test of Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure, with concerns over Ashley Cole and John Obi Mikel before forthcoming matches against Apoel and Liverpool.
Petr Cech, the goalkeeper, will miss the Barclays Premier League game against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday through suspension, having been sent off for a professional foul as Chelsea suffered their first defeat under Ancelotti, away to Wigan Athletic on Saturday. But, while the club’s medical staff is examining injuries suffered by Cole and Mikel during the game, Terry was more concerned with the team’s lack of application at the DW Stadium.
“When you go to places like Wigan, you’ve got to match them — match their workrate, match their effort, win your headers, win your tackles — and we simply didn’t do that in the first half,” he said. “You can go anywhere in the world and not play well, but the least we expect from every player is that we work hard and fight. We didn’t do that today — the whole team collectively. That’s the most disappointing thing of all.
“All the other big sides in and around us have had emphatic wins, so it’s disappointing that we’ve thrown away three points. The manager has stressed that and the players feel that. You can’t come to places like this, when they’ve got their crowd right behind them, and not match their work ethic. We didn’t win our headers or our tackles and that’s simply not good enough. That’s the minimum we ask for.
“It’s a massive game at home again for us next week and it’s important that we bounce back on Wednesday night [away to Apoel, of Cyprus, in the Champions League]. That’s probably the only good thing coming away from this game, that we’ve got another game on Wednesday. So we regroup, we go again and, hopefully, get a good win on Wednesday [to put ourselves in a good position in the Champions League group.”
Chelsea lost both league matches against Liverpool last season — 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and 2-0 at Anfield — and, having lost their 100 per cent record in the 3-1 defeat by Wigan, they face the prospect of going into Sunday’s fixture without Cech, Cole and Mikel.
Cole and Mikel suffered knee and ankle injuries respectively at the DW Stadium and appeared to be in great discomfort as they boarded the bus, with the latter wearing a lightweight protective boot. Both players had scans yesterday and, even if neither injury is as serious as first seemed, Ancelotti is unlikely to risk either player against Apoel.
“We have to try and control these things,” Ancelotti said on Saturday evening. “Ashley Cole has a problem, Mikel, too, and we have to control these injuries in the next few days. Sometimes we have players out, but that’s not a problem. We have a competitive bench.”
Cech’s deputy against Liverpool will be Hilário, the 33-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper, who has started 14 Premier League matches since joining Chelsea in 2006. If Cole is forced to miss either or both games, Ancelotti’s options include Branislav Ivanovic, Paulo Ferreira or, if he is feeling brave, Yuri Zhirkov, whose only appearance since his £18 million summer move from CSKA Moscow came against Queens Park Rangers in the Carling Cup last week. Joe Cole is likely to be involved against Apoel, having made his comeback against QPR after a long-term ankle injury.
Cech walked out of the stadium saying that “I don’t think it should have been a penalty”, in relation to the foul on Hugo Rodallega that led to his red card and the second Wigan goal. But his complaint seemed groundless and there is little or no prospect that Chelsea would succeed if they appealed against his suspension.
Chelsea were displaced at the top of the table on goal difference by Manchester United on Saturday, but Ancelotti remains happy with their overall progress. “Now it is important that we don’t make a drama,” he said. “We have lost one game and the team is in a good condition now. This is normal in football. It’s impossible that all our matches will be good. We have done very well until now and we have to make sure we have a good reaction to this game against Apoel and also against Liverpool.” * * *
