Zenit St. Petersburg boss Luciano Spalletti has shed light on his relationship with Roma captain Francesco Totti.
Spalletti resigned from his position with the Giallorossi in September after four very successful years with the club.
The 50-year-old Tuscan won the Coppa Italia twice at the Olimpico but his relationship with Totti was often under strain.
In fact, Totti expressed little in the way of disappointment when Spalletti actually left the club.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Spalletti said: “We had our arguments. Francesco and I wanted the same objective, the good of Roma. I wanted it one way and Francesco the other.
“Whoever goes to Roma knows that they have to manage the situation regarding Totti, because Francesco always puts himself in the middle of things.”
One thing Totti and Spalletti are said to have clashed over is transfers. Totti has often inserted himself into Roma's market strategy, getting on the phone to convince players to come to the club.
“Maybe I told him that he should worry himself with the transfer market. It was a question of roles,” Spalletti admitted.
Finally Spalletti rejected claims that he was close to joining Juventus in the summer.
“The Bianconeri never got in touch with me. And then I still had a lot to do with Roma. The Giallorossi shirt will always remains on my skin. I hope that they continue playing at their current level and return to the Champions League, but I hope not to meet them there,” he concluded.
