Wayne Rooney? What an insult to Pele, Cruyff, Maradona + Platini
According to England manager Fabio Capello, thug-in-a-shirt Wayne Rooney could have the same impact for England that Pele, Johann Cruyff, Michel Platini and Diego Maradona had for their respective countries. In my view, Rooney doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as those players...except, perhaps, Platini, with whom he shares one particularly loathsome trait.
In the absence of basically everyone else who would've worn the armband, Rooney is Captain for England's game against Brazil. In an interview on the subject, Capello said:
"I remember the best players in the world - Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Platini - were captains, no? They scored goals. So why not Rooney? I don't understand why he cannot also be captain. You have to be a leader on the pitch and all the best players were captains. Maradona is another example."
If being a leader on the pitch means screaming and swearing in referees' faces and petulantly hacking away at other players when the ref's back is turned, then I guess Rooney really is a paragon of leadership.
In my view, Rooney is not one of the best players in the world, and he is certainly nowhere near the quality or class of the likes of Pele and Cruyff.
Having said that though, Rooney does share one particular trait with UEFA president Michel Platini: they are both arguably CHEATS.
In my recent FOOTBALL CHEATS series, Rooney appeared 4 times in the top 20 for blatant dives and simulation. Despite the serial diving, Rooney never seems to get any bad press, whereas players like Eduardo and David Ngog - both of whom are not in Rooney's league when it comes to diving - are crucified by the press. I wonder why that is...?
As for Platini - he recently destroyed any credibility he has and damaged his reputation as one of football’s greatest ever players when he revealed that it was his 'dream' to dive in a World Cup Semi-Final.
No, you read that right - Platini actually said that. In the aftermath of the infamous Eduardo dive, he stated:
"I know why players dive. I've dived myself. We did it because we knew the referee wouldn't see it and because there were no cameras. If we could get away with it we would. It was always my dream to dive and get a penalty in the World Cup semi-final to make up for what happened when Harald Schumacher [the German goalkeeper] fouled Patrick Battiston outside the area. If I could have done it I would because I hate injustice. I just couldn't get into the box”.
Just look at Platini’s imbecilic reasoning: it’s okay to cheat as long as it’s revenge against perceived injustice. And this man runs UEFA?
Rooney and Platini: peas in a pod.
