The former United favourite put his new club 2-1 ahead in the semi-final first-leg at Eastlands with a brace in a typically industrious display.
Unused substitute Neville had suggested manager Alex Ferguson was right to move the striker on in the summer — remarks that riled Tevez who then let his feet do the talking.
Zabaleta said: "One Manchester United player talked about Carlos before the game, which showed he is a top class player.
"He is amazing, everyone knows Carlos is a great player. Everyone loves him.
"This was a special game for him, one he has been dreaming about.
"I am aware of his qualities and think he can give a repeat performance against United next week."
After Tevez had drilled home the penalty that pulled his side level he spotted Neville warming up on the touchline.
He indicated Neville should keep his mouth shut and got a one-fingered response from the United defender, which the FA are to investigate.
And when Tevez, who has now scored 17 goals this season, headed in City's winner he again cupped his hands to his ears in another taunt to the defender.
