Reina - keeper, so....
johnson - OFFENSIVE for his position
carragher - DEFENSIVE for his position
agger - OFFENSIVE for his position
insua - OFFENSIVE for his position
mascherano - DEFENSIVE for his position
lucas - even mix of both
kuyt - OFFENSIVE for his position
gerrard - OFFENSIVE for his position
babel - OFFENSIVE for his position
torres - striker, so...
that's 7 of the 10 outfield players who are more offensively oriented for the positions that they play. an eighth player mixes between attack and defense. only TWO of the 10 outfield players are primarily defensively oriented....
exactly how is that rafa putting out a defensive team?
i understand that a lot of people don't like Rafa, and despite my support for him i can see that he's made mistakes as a manager, but this really should not blind such a large number of people from reality.
i despise sam allardyce, but i can at least see that his team played some quality stuff at times when we last played them - stuff that ran contrary to his label of a thuggish long-ball merchant manager.
why are people incapable of doing this with other managers, especially rafa at the moment???
does it honestly make sense to people to blame lucas for the other SEVEN OFFENSIVELY-MINDED PLAYERS doing NOTHING against Lille?
when the ball is forward of the two holding midfielders, whatever happens is not the blame of them - it's the blame of the forward attackers who lose possession.
i cannot even recall all the times this season where lucas or mascherano gave a good ball to gerrard or kuyt, put them in a position to maintain the attack, just for one of them to cheaply give the ball away and put us (mainly, lucas and masch) on the back foot....just for them to win the ball back and start the cycle over again.
is it lucas' fault if torres decides he'd rather try to dribble through 3 players than maintain possession?
is it masch's fault that gerrard wants to pass it to the opposition, or that kuyt enjoys dribbling into touch?
how would aquilani playing instead of lucas suddenly make the other 7 offensively oriented players remember how to trap a ball and pass to a teammate?
someone please - without generalizing with nonsense like "rafa rubbish....lucas tripe....blah blah blah...." - explain to me how aquilani passing a ball to gerrard automatically means that gerrard will actually do something positive with it.
if someone - ANYONE - can come up with a half-decent argument for this, i will literally buy a plane ticket from arizona to liverpool, and hang a handmade "RAFA OUT" banner from the shankly gates, and protest to the same for the entirety of the next home game....that's how confident i am that there's not a SINGLE person on this site that can provide this - because common sense alone should tell you that if Steven Gerrard, twelve-year veteran and captain of Liverpool FC and the England National Team, cannot control a ball passed to his feet or pass to a teammate, it is NOT the fault of some 23 year-old brazilian....
