Calcio Debate: Jean Claude Blanc & Alessio Secco Must Resign As Juventus Hit The Lowest Point In Their History
If Blanc, Secco and Co. have any pride, they should move aside, writes Carlo Garganese…
By Carlo Garganese
Several weeks ago I wrote a Calcio Debate in which I declared that the destruction of the current Juventus was almost complete with the interim appointment of coach Alberto Zaccheroni. That journey moved one step closer last night following the humiliating 4-1 thrashing at the hands of the ‘mighty’ Fulham.
March 18, 2010 represents one of the lowest points in the glorious history of the Bianconeri. While Juve were certainly playing against 12 men last night, this is no excuse for such an embarrassment.
Every time I discuss the Old Lady I feel as if I am repeating myself – since 2007 I have stated in no uncertain terms that the current leadership are completely incompetent. So incompetent that it is little wonder that most Juve fans believe they were part of the whole Calciopoli ‘conspiracy’, some even going as far as to suggest it was an inside job.
The facts are there for everyone to see. The management complied with the punishments that came their way during Calciopoli – never once defending the club against some questionable accusations. They further helped make Inter the new superpower by selling them Serie A’s best player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a decision so utterly preposterous it belies belief. They signed one transfer flop after another, appointed inadequate or inexperienced coaches, and surrounded themselves with businessmen without the first idea about football. Jean Claude Blanc knows as much about football as Bill Gates, yet he is president of Italy’s most successful football club.
Juventus’ injury count over the past couple of seasons requires a criminal investigation. Are the training pitches at Vinovo not good enough? Are the medical team not good enough? Or is there something more to it than that? There were never problems like this prior to 2006.
If the current administration had any pride and decency they would step aside, perhaps to allow Andrea Agnelli, the nephew of Gianni, assume a high-profile role within the club. Only then could Juventus fans dream of returning to their glory days.
As things stand, it has been yet another trophyless season and qualification for the Champions League is very much at risk. With away games to come at Milan, Inter, Napoli, Udinese and Sampdoria, I wouldn’t put any money on Juve finishing in the top four. Seven goals conceded in two games against Siena and Fulham - hardly inspires confidence does it?
Following last night’s catastrophe, a large group of Juve fans chanted “Vattene Blanc e Secco” – “Go away Blanc and Secco”. It is about time they did.
