Milan’s Andrea Pirlo has admitted he won’t be cheering on city rivals Inter in their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
Talking to La Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday, the playmaker concedes that he’s undecided whether he would take up the offer of a Serie A title for Milan if Inter won the European Cup.
“I’m not sure if I would be happy with that,” he said. “I don’t think I would be…
“I have cheered Inter on until this point because they were the only Italian side left in Europe and we needed some coefficient ranking points.
“However, they have now brought us a few points and we can relax if they go out in the next stage.”
Pirlo took another dig at the Nerazzurri by admitting that he has great admiration for Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.
“Jose Mourinho is charismatic, but Guardiola is my model as a player and Coach. He was unique as a player and he’s no less as a tactician.”
Milan are currently third in Serie A, but the former Brescia gem is adamant that the Scudetto is still a possibility with Inter just three points clear.
“Never say never,” he noted. “We have six games to go but three points is not a small amount to get back.
“Regrets for the season? The first leg against Manchester United could have ended in a different manner.
“And I’m also thinking about the points dropped in one week against Napoli, Parma and Lazio.
“It’s still been a positive season for us nonetheless. We played good football for a while, but then suffered many injuries.”
The World Cup winner also praised debutant boss Leonardo for his fine work at San Siro this term.
“Leonardo has surprised me,” he claimed. “He had never coached anyone and immediately proved he was up to the job.
“He has personality and made his decisions without looking at anybody in the face. I think and I hope he will stay.
“This season has been one of transition with the squad made up in a certain way, but next term will be better.”
