"I am so proud to be an Englishman," said Terry on the eve of his country's final World Cup warm-up match against Japan.
"The hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I hear the National Anthem.
"I can't put into words the emotions I get when thousands of fans belt out God Save The Queen.
"It's the best feeling I've ever had on a football field. That's when I puff my chest out and move into game mode."
The Chelsea captain knows the whole country is desperate for success.
He said: "No other country in the world gets better backing from their supporters. At Euro 2004 and the last World Cup, England fans outnumbered and outsang everyone.
"When we went to Croatia for the World Cup qualifier, the players couldn't believe how many supporters had taken time off work to follow us.
"We really appreciate that and desperately want to pay them back at this World Cup.
"If I wasn't playing for England, I'd definitely be out there among those supporters because I understand what it means to be English."
