European Opportunity Fulham are edging ever closer to a return to European football with just one game of the 2010/11 season remaining.
On Monday UEFA confirmed that that the Premier League had finished in the top three of their Fair Play rankings.
With the domestic Fair Play leaders Chelsea having already qualified for the Champions League and Tottenham leapfrogging Liverpool into a fifth place Europa qualifying position following a 2-0 win at Anfield, Fulham could now be set to make a remarkable return to European football should results go their way this weekend.
If Spurs end the season in fifth place on Sunday, Fulham’s supporters will have to wait a further five days for official confirmation of whether the Club can look forward to another European adventure, something Manager Mark Hughes is clearly hoping for.
“If we get into the competition [Europa League] we’ll be delighted and we’ll try and progress as far as we can," Hughes told fulhamfc.com. “I think we’re very close but a lot of things have to fall into place before we can say we’re playing in Europe next season, but if we are, we’ll give it a go.
“We should embrace it, and if we’re in it, we’ll try our best to be successful. It’s a difficult competition to negotiate because of the time frame and the amount of games you have to play. If you want to progress you have to come back very early and start playing football almost immediately when you come back.”
Fulham have received a spate of yellow cards in their last two Barclays Premier League matches but Hughes is delighted with his Team’s overall disciplinary record and will be hoping to embark on a European adventure with Fulham next season.
“In some games you’ll pick up more yellow cards than you will in other games,” Hughes explained. “That’s a consequence of what we do and we’ve been very good in terms of our discipline this season.”
