With Mirko Vucinic injured, the attacking threat from Montenegro went from limited to virtually non-existent. Hart’s distribution and handling were consistent, but he was essentially just a spectator and did not have a save of note to make throughout the match.
Glen Johnson 6
Another mixed performance that highlighted both his attacking quality and defensive frailties. Missed an early tackle on Radomir Djalovic to concede a good opportunity for Montenegro but then also provided a cross of pinpoint accuracy that was ultimately wasted by Crouch.
Rio Ferdinand 6
A shaky start and was fortunate to escape a first-half booking for a rash tackle on Milorad Pekovic. Settled as the game unfolded although his lack of football, particularly at international level, was occasionally evident. Still vital for England but clearly now needs a lengthy sequence of games.
Joleon Lescott 6
Provides a balance to the England central defence with his natural left-sided preference and is now a far more confident presence than when he began his international career under Steve McLaren. Was commanding in the air and did most to keep Djalovic, Montenegro’s main danger-man, quiet.
Ashley Cole 6
Another sound all-round performance prompted rare appreciation from the Wembley crowd on a night when he equalled Kenny Sansom’s England record of 86 caps for a full-back. Got forward to help Young while his pace and reading of the game helped restrict Montenegro’s counter-attacks.
Adam Johnson 7
Has been the one new face to really seize his chance since the World Cup and, despite the occasionally wasteful moment in possession, continues to look like he truly belongs at international level. Made several incisive runs, although the final ball was ultimately lacking.
Steven Gerrard 7 Any concern that the loss of the captaincy would restrict his influence was eased in the opening minutes when he cut open the Montenegro defence with a wonderful cross-field pass. Tried to set the tempo for England and also got back to support the defence with several important interceptions.
Gareth Barry 4
Seemed devoid of any real urgency and, just as in South Africa during the World Cup, there were occasions when he appeared almost to be moving in slow motion. His position is surely most threatened by the midfield emergence at Arsenal of Jack Wilshere.
Ashley Young 5
Cut inside menacingly with his first real opportunity only for the shot to finish closer to the corner flag than the goal. His pace clearly did worry Montenegro but his delivery remained wayward and he was also booked for an embarrassing second-half dive.
Wayne Rooney 5
Clearly out of form and, with Montenegro so well organised, was forced to drop deeper and deeper to find the ball. His two best chances were well saved by Mladen Bozovic and the frustration manifested itself with a deserved yellow card for a trip on Elsad Zverotic.
Peter Crouch 5
His goals to games ratio has long been his main strength for England but was unusually profligate last night. Just failed to get a touch on Gerrard’s defence-splitting through ball and headed Glen Johnson’s cross over from an inviting position on the edge of the six-yard box.

Had to wait until the 70th minute to finally make his international debut at the age of 33 but was unable to present Montenegro with a sufficiently different problem.
Shaun Wright-Phillips 6
Replaced Young on the left and caused similar concern with his pace to force a flurry of late free-kicks in inviting positions.

Largely untroubled throughout but he rarely looks anything but confident and comfortable. However, the Manchester City keeper was fortunate when Jovanovic's shot rattled the crossbar.

Foraged forward as much as possible. Good interplay with Gerrard saw him through on goal but his pass didn't find Rooney. Sloppy in the second half.

Comfortable on the ball as expected and was hardly troubled by Djalovic in the air. The captain did little wrong but could he have galvanised England more and set the tempo from the back as he can?

Montenegro offered so little going forward that Lescott and Ferdinand were left containing one striker between them. A relatively comfortable night for the Manchester City man.

A big night for the Chelsea full back as he equalled Kenny Sansom's 86 caps. Assured performance but offered little going forward.

Alongside Gerrard looked England's most likely source of inspiration. Two free kicks went close and he was eager to chase every ball.

Played as if he still had the armband on, His probing passes and clever through balls laid on several chances for his team-mates. Linked up well with Johnson and sat back when Barry fancied venturing forward.

Saw plenty of the ball and looked for Rooney and Crouch at every given opportunity but his passing was wayward too often. Booked on 63 minutes.

Lively but wasteful too slicing a shot to the corner flag and fluffing a free kick on the edge of the box. Booked for a clumsy dive.

The troubled superstar was a peripheral figure for much of the game. Shot tamely when played through by Gerrard and brought a fine save from Bozovic as England looked for that elusive goal. Still off his game.
Peter Crouch

Had one of those frustrating Peter Crouch nights. Conceded too many free kicks and missed a gilt-edged chance in the first half as his point blank header looped off target.
