It was a fantastic game to watch regardless of what team you support. The problem, though, is that yet again the man who calls the shots in the middle of the pitch (and I don't mean Fergie) had a large influence on the outcome of the match.
There were three big decisions in the match that Martin Atkinson had to judge. The incidents were the awarding of a penalty to Chelsea, a late Nemanja Vidic red card and the decision to not send off David Luiz after fouling Wayne Rooney.
To help narrow the debate and to move on to the more important matters - Vidic's 90th minute red card had little influence on the game and in all fairness the Serbian was on thin ice having just fouled Didier Drogba only moments before his dismissal. The other two big decisions, though, had a huge impact on the game.
Many United fans and even Sir Alex were not happy that Atkinson was named as referee for the match due to their previous run-ins. Atkinson's performance last night would not have changed Ferguson's feelings towards him, and in fact, has made things worse.
There is a growing debate in this country that referees get too much abuse and not enough appreciation for the job they do. The problem, though, is that they make it very hard for themselves to get good press.
United fans were incensed at Atkinson's decision to not send off Luiz for an off the ball tackle on Wayne Rooney, which obviously should've been a second yellow card for the Brazilian. The fact that he was only five yards away makes the decision that much worse, let alone the fact that Luiz had only just body checked Javier Hernandez as well.
The score at the time of the incident was 1-1, with 25 minutes still to go. If Luiz were to be sent off, it could have had a huge impact on the outcome of the game. Yes, it could have swung either way, but Chelsea would have changed their system and adopted a more defensive set up, which would have favoured United.
Atkinson's next major action in the game was to award Chelsea an 81st minute penalty. Watching the game live, it didn't look like a penalty but the more you saw the incident it would appear that Atkinson made the right call.
The problem with the modern game and the modern footballer for that matter, is that players go into the box looking to go down to get a penalty. This all too common these days and it's a growing issue within the game. Personally, I feel that referees need to distinguish the difference between a defender making a purposeful tackle or simply standing still, whilst the attacker moves his leg towards the player.
At no point did Chris Smalling move towards Yuri Zhirkov. This is by no means suggesting Chelsea are the offenders here as most teams in the division posses players that have been guilty of such an offence. It is something that referees need to keep an eye on.
Chelsea, however, were the better side in the second half and did at least deserve something from the game. But it's a shame that yet again another important victory will be marred by a referee's performance.

The Manchester United manager claimed that it was the third consecutive time that refereeing decisions had cost his team against Chelsea and,
in remarks that will be closely scrutinised by the Football Association, he criticised Atkinson’s selection for the game.
