Sky Sports sources understand that Manchester United defender John O'Shea is having a medical at Sunderland.
The experienced O'Shea has spent his entire career at Old Trafford, but could now be ending his 13-year association with the club.
The Republic of Ireland international is currently in the North East and he could finalise the switch before the weekend.
Sunderland are understood to have launched a triple £12million raid on United this summer in their pursuit of O'Shea, Wes Brown and Darron Gibson.
It has already been a busy summer for Sunderland following the acquisitions of Keiren Westwood, Sebastian Larsson, Craig Gardner and Connor Wickham.
O'Shea could be the second Red Devil to join this week after Brown had his medical and he is expected to be unveiled on Thursday.
Sky Sports News sources understands Wes Brown is undergoing a medical at Sunderland and is poised to be unveiled as a Black Cats player on Thursday morning.
The 31-year-old defender has spent his entire career at Old Trafford, penning his first senior deal there back in 1996 and notching up over 200 appearances.
However, he found playing time limited last season, making just 15 outings, while his seven Premier League appearances for the champions were not enough to earn him a league winners' medal.
Brown is now set to make a move to the Stadium of Light as manager Steve Bruce looks to strengthen his resources ahead of the new season.
He could be joined by United team-mates Darren Gibson and John O'Shea on Wearside, with the Black Cats believed to be closing in on a triple raid of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.
Chairman Niall Quinn said earlier this week he is hopeful on the O'Shea deal after the Republic of Ireland international also slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
