Serie A Team of the Season
Another absorbing Serie A adventure has come to an end. Dave Taylor, having seen a craze for 3-5-2, picks his team of the season.
Gianluigi Buffon [Juventus]With a record 21 clean sheets and just 16 goals conceded, ‘Superman’ has certainly lived up to his nickname this season. As imperial as ever, he has been the solid base that Juve have built their Scudetto win on. Always capable of the spectacular, he is nonetheless invariably reduced to a watching brief most games. Yet when called on to make a game-breaking save he is always there. One of his top moments must be his breath-taking block on Francesco Totti’s ferocious spot-kick in the 1-1 draw with Roma in December. We’ll forgive him for his error against Lecce. Authorative.
Andrea Barzagli [Juventus]A truly commanding central defender, he has been an invariable in Juve’s defence all season. His experience, decision making and intelligence has also seen him become a highly respected player. One of the first names down on the team sheet, the 31-year-old has played in all but three of this season’s games and has been a revelation with his overall tactical awareness. Steadfast.
Thiago Silva [Milan]Globally recognised as being one of the very best defenders, it has been his elegant control and ability to play the ball out of defence that has been at the heart of Milan’ success. Equally at home in midfield, he was a true figure of stability until the decision was taken to risk him in the game against Roma. Out ever since with injury, Milan’s season collapsed. If anyone can step into Alessandro Nesta’s boots, then it is Silva. Illuminating.
Giorgio Chiellini [Juventus]Chiello’s raw-boned power has made him such a force of nature and consequently an integral part of Europe’s best defence. His crucial headed equaliser in Week 15’s 1-1 draw with Roma was a perfect example of why Juve have strode through the season unbeaten. He possesses all the power of a stampeding stallion and his last ditch tackles have rescued Juve on more than one occasion this campaign. Impelling.
Christian Maggio [Napoli]The Italian international’s passing, passion and positioning down the right are some of the reasons for Napoli’s beautiful and captivating counter-attacking system. Always alert and an ever ready outlet from defence, his all-round contributions were best witnessed in the 3-0 defeat of Inter. The Partenopei menace scored one and had a massive hand in the other two, including winning a penalty. A further measure of his worth was seen in March and April when during his seven game absence, Napoli won just one game without him. Influential.
Arturo Vidal [Juventus]If you did not know it, you would have thought the Chilean had been part of Juve’s midfield for years. With seven goals and four assists to his credit he has been a master of consistency. A combined ball winner and distributor in game after game, his decision making has been critical and nowhere was this better seen than in his brilliant goal against Napoli in Week 30’s 3-0 win, as he showed Hugo Campagnaro, no slouch himself, a clean pair of heels. Galvanic.
Andrea Pirlo [Juventus]Every team needs a ‘Metronome’ and the soon to be 33-year-old has been the perfect timekeeper at the beating heart of the new champions. With 13 assists and three goals compared to his injury affected last campaign with Milan, even if not quite the raising of Lazarus from the dead, it has still been a big turn around. As Europe’s supreme pass master, he can place a ball within a millimetre of its intended target and with an average of 87 passes per game it turns out he is the top midfielder in the continent’s top five Leagues. Imperious.
Antonio Nocerino [Milan]Arguably the bargain of the season, the 27-year-old cost a mere €0.5m from Palermo and has been a revelation with his awesome work-rate and box to box running. Scoring 10 goals, including a fantastic hat trick against Parma, he showed that he has several strings to his bow. Invigorating.
Pablo Armero [Udinese]The 25-year-old Colombian has been one of Serie A’s most consistent players and has attracted heavy interest, thanks to his versatility and ability to play anywhere in defence and even in midfield. Started the season like a runaway train. Muscular and athletic, he is the perfect example of the modern, athletic wing-back and has 12 assists to his name, thanks to his menacing runs down the left flank. Assertive.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic [Milan]As the first player to become Capocannoniere with two different Serie A clubs, the Swede’s activities as a playmaker, as well Italy’s most dangerous striker, make him the scourge of defenders everywhere. He underlined his irreplaceable value to Milan and his 28 strikes and 10 assists saw him inextricably involved in over half of their goals. Arguably his two stand-out performances this campaign were his hat-trick against Palermo and his 100th Serie A goal, the first of his two against Chievo in late November. Ameliorating.
Ezequiel Lavezzi [Napoli]Il Pocho is the complete forward – scoring and supplying goals throughout the season. And although he is not top of the assist table, he brings much more than the penultimate pass. An example of his brilliance was seen in February and March when he went on a run of five games where he was absolutely unplayable, scoring six goals including the winner over Inter. As one of the trickiest dribblers in Serie A, he can make defenders look like newly born giraffes on ice and has had a seemingly telepathic understanding with Edinson Cavani and Marek Hamsik. Synergetic.
